Nowadays, the Rumble is sort of a variety hour. People expect random moments instead of straight fighting and that leads to pauses and breaks just so stuff can happen

They spend too much time laying around!

People expect random moments instead of straight fighting and that leads to pauses and breaks just so stuff can happen That's another good way of phrasing it, "variety hour". I get doing that now and then, but the idea made me think back to I think 1994, when Marty Jannetty entered and immediately made a beeline for Shawn Michaels and the two started throwing haymakers at one another, all while the rest of the match continued around them; do that today and it likely involves a lot of the other guys getting out of sight so Marty and Shawn can move all over around the ring.

Which was worse, Sasha outsife of the ring for most of a rumble or Roman sleeping through a Rumble?

Totally agree. That's my favorite part about the old school Rumbles is that I have seen them all dozens of times and each time I watch them, I see something new. Guys are constantly working in the corners and doing stuff. There are a ton of hidden comedy spots. Because of all that action, if a guy is in there 15 minutes it seems like a huge accomplishment.
In today's Rumble's, there's lots of laying and way too much featuring the guy who just ran in. I hate how the guy who entered usually does his signatures and finishers to like 6 guys and then his taunt. Those 6 guys lay around for a few minutes while the new guy either has a stare down with a rival or interesting challenger, flash eliminates people or gets flash eliminated himself. Rinse and repeat. It's just so fake. I like the "sport" feel of the old Rumbles where most of the time a guy will just come down, look for an opportunity to bash someone from behind and then he's a part of the match. The psychology was so much better and interesting. Modern Rumbles, like all WWE, feels like the high spots of wrestling without any of the substance that make those high spots feel important.

Apparently, Vince McMahon put together the mens rumble match, with help from Michael Hayes, Jamie Noble and Pat Patterson.

Which was worse, Sasha outsife of the ring for most of a rumble or Roman sleeping through a Rumble? Roman sleeping, at least Sasha was TRYING to get back in and kept getting knocked out, not walking under her own power away from the match.

There was one where roman was laying in the corner 90% of the match and one where he walked out

There was one where roman was laying in the corner 90% of the match and one where he walked out Ah yes of course, too many examples of bad booking. When those happen, I always think of Bobby Heenan's interview after the 1992 Rumble: "He went out there for over sixty minutes, never took a back step! Took it to Hogan, took it to the Undertaker, took it to whoever got in that ring!" And it was all true. Back in the day, they'd give that booking to a heel, now their superman babyface can't do it. It's not like the Rumble sneaks up, have him use December to build up his cardio so you don't have to do these asinine things.
