I was a kid when the split happened and the costumes looked cool at first. The problem was that there was no character development to go along with it. It was just bland guys in Halloween costumes. The managers clearly checked out too which didn't help. If there was more of a character, it would help the fans to get involved and be invested. Give us a reason to hate them or cheer the faces against them.
I also think powers of pain could have stayed allies and then re teamed if necessary. Instead they split to two separate managers.

I can certainly see them as LOD ripoffs, it's probably why Vince didn't repackage them until the real thing came along. But I'll never understand those that say it about Demolition. Except the facepaint they couldn't be more dissimilar. If anything else, they were a vast improvement on LOD.

The early days of The Road Warriors looked somewhat similar to a Mad Max biker type gimmick. The comparisons are with the face paint, the leather, and the spikes.
I could see some fun matches with those three teams. You could have LOD beat Demolition for the titles and then have 1powers of Pain come in and start the feud.
