to pick a weakest film.
The Indiana Jones thread got me thinking. A lot of film trilogies have one film that seems to stir up conversation about how good it is compared to the other two. For example, with The Godfather trilogy, Part III is almost universally deemed as the worst of the three. (I actually think it’s a good film, it’s that it had to follow two masterpieces that set such a ridiculously high standard, it was always going to struggle). Then there’s Indiana Jones (just because there’s a fourth film doesn’t stop the first three from being a trilogy). Although criticism of Temple of Doom has softened a lot in more recent times, it was still quite polarising upon its release. Star Wars has Jedi, The Nolan Batman trilogy has Rises, Alien had 3, The Cornetto trilogy has The World’s End and so on. It’s common for there to be that one film that divides opinion.
Then in some trilogies it can be one of two films that fulfill that role. For example, here in the UK, a lot of people seem to prefer Back to the Future Part III over Part II. But when I lived in the USA, the general feeling I got from people when I was there was that Part III is the weaker film. Other examples are Lord of the Rings where (depending on who you ask) The Two Towers or Return of the King gets the “worst of the three” treatment. I’m generalising as I’m sure there are people who will disagree with any of the films I’ve cited as examples.
But there are a few trilogies though where it doesn’t seem to have a “weak link”. Where there’s no general critical or general public consensus that one film is slightly dragging the series down. Toy Story is one. Possibly The Dollars Trilogy is another. I’d also maybe add the recent Planet of the Apes films, as IMO they’ve quietly become one of the best film trilogies ever.
What are yours?

I'd say the Captain America trilogy counts. Despite Winter Soldier getting a lot of praise (rightfully so, imo), Civil War and The First Avenger are solid in their own right.

Star Wars original trilogy. I know people would say Return is the weakest but so disagree on so many fronts. Each film is amazing in its own right and I can never just say one is my favorite or rank them.... The sequels and prequels don't get that luxury.

I've never seen a bad Terminator or Pierce Brosnan Bond film (yes, I know they aren't trilogies. I still like them).

I've never seen a bad Terminator or Pierce Brosnan Bond film (yes, I know they aren't trilogies. I still like them). I'd say Terminator 3 is easily the weakest of the original trilogy. And, as much as I enjoyed Brosnan himself as Bond, I feel 3 out of the 4 movies are shite. Only Goldenye is particularly good

I enjoy both, but the horror movie aspect of T1 makes it seem out of place within the trilogy. Disagree about Brosnan.

I love A View to a Kill, so I have no room to judge

The new Apes Trilogy is fairly strong in all three films with only Rise maybe being a bit weaker due to the focus being split on Will and Caesar.

Toy Story- I think they played it well by having such a large gap between 2 and 3. 3 was a fantastic film in it's own right but one of the huge selling points was the nostalgia.

The Naked Gun
People criticize 33 and 3rd, but it's still insanely funny and fits perfectly with the other 2.

I know I am one of the few,but I have disliked T2 since I saw it in a theater when it came out. Love the first and 3rd films. But haven't bothered watched T2 in close at 20 years.

I can agree that Jedi is the weak link of the original SW trilogy, however it's also the one I absolutely love the most so that agreement is a technicality.

Which is why I'm really nervous about 4. 3 was a perfect ending to the overall story. I just don't want that to be ruined.
