If you excised the Ewoks from ROTJ and the ridiculously long ending from ROTK, I think they’d both be held in much higher regard.

Toy Story- I think they played it well by having such a large gap between 2 and 3. 3 was a fantastic film in it's own right but one of the huge selling points was the nostalgia. Which is why I'm really nervous about 4. 3 was a perfect ending to the overall story. I just don't want that to be ruined. There was similar talk about 2 and 3 and both times Pixar nailed it. Yes, the ending of part three seemed like a perfect ending but (so did Part two for that matter) but it also set up those characters for a new generation. And as hit and miss as Pixar sequels have been, they’ve always treated Toy Story as something above the rest of their work.

ROTK isn't held in high regard? It is #8 all time on imdb.com and gets 5 stars on allmovie.com. It got a 94% on rottentomatoes.com in the pre "Disney pays the critics" era, haha.
Am I the only one who thinks the original Star Wars is the weakest of that trilogy? I much prefer Empire and Jedi.

Star Trek's trilogy, 2, 3, and 4, is pretty solid. 3 might be the weakest link, but not by much.

If nothing else, (the original cut of) ANH deserves credit for being beat for beat perfect in terms of pacing, and for setting such a wonderful stage.

The reason I mentioned ROTK is because whenever people criticise the trilogy, the multiple endings of the third seem to be the main sticking point. It’s actually my favourite of the three and is in my Top 10 of all-time and I love the ending. But neither of the other two have that one thing that constantly gets brought up negatively.

Winer Soldier and Fellowship are my favorites of each trilogy, but I could happily sit through all three Captain America or LOTR films and never get bored.

Original Star Wars trilogy, Toy Story trilogy, Captain America trilogy.
I also consider Star Trek: Wrath of Khan, Search for Spock, and The Voyage Home a trilogy as the movies are all direct followups of each other, with the other Trek movies being more standalone. Search for Spock was a bit weaker than Khan and Voyage Home, but all three movies are solid.

Romero's Dead Trilogy, though I lean towards Day being my favourite.

I haaaaaaated Toy Story 2.
Nolan’s Bat Trilogy. Id probably lean toward Rises being weakest but they’re all good.
(Wouldve said Snyder’s MOS, BvS and JL trilogy but I dont wanna get beat up for loving those. Lol)

What if all three movies are total ass? Then you would be talking about Zack Snyder’s Superman/Batman trilogy.

Had it ended with the “you bow to no one” scene I think it would be universally regarded as the best of the trilogy. Forcing another 20 minutes on the audience ruined the goodwill.

I'd argue that the Cornetto Trilogy is one. While The World's End is less popular mainly for having to follow the other two sterling films and being something quite different - as well as deconstructing the slacker/manchild character archetype they'd used for Tim Bisley, a model that's still pretty popular - I'd argue it's the best written. In fact, you could probably argue that Shaun Of The Dead isn't as tightly constructed as the other two, which do such a marvellous job of foreshadowing the main plot beats almost from the very beginning. But still, every film is incredible.

I've always thought it was because there was too much time between the first two movies and the last, or just a general lack of awareness that it's a trilogy at all. Shaun made a good sized cultural splash, but Hot Fuzz much less so.

Shaun made a good sized cultural splash, but Hot Fuzz much less so. I think the time between Hot Fuzz and The World’s End is definitely a factor. HF came out three years after Shaun of the Dead and grossed 80 million (nearly triple the Box Office of SOTD) but it took six years for TWE and it had a disappointing Box Office. It was very noticeable in the UK. When Hot Fuzz came out here was a huge buzz about it and it didn’t disappoint with Wright and Pegg (amongst others) getting lots of offers. Which actually ended up hurting the third film as their commitments stopped them from making it for so long. It’s a shame because TWE is a great film. It has an awesome cast, is extremely well written and the fight sequences are IMO on a par with some of the choreography seen in classic martial arts films. But for some reason, it didn’t quite click with people the same way the first two did. It’s the “weakest” of the three but again, that’s not saying it’s a weak film.

The problem for me is that there is a toss-up between the first and last one for 'weakest'. I enjoy both, but the horror movie aspect of T1 makes it seem out of place within the trilogy. Disagree about Brosnan. With 24 Bond movies, no way would we agree on all of them. I love A View to a Kill, so I have no room to judge Neither do I. I liked Batman And Robin, so my tastes in entertainment may be considered 'weird' to some people. The Naked Gun People criticize 33 and 3rd, but it's still insanely funny and fits perfectly with the other 2. Great example! The problem for me is that there is a toss-up between the first and last one for 'weakest'. I enjoy both, but the horror movie aspect of T1 makes it seem out of place within the trilogy. Disagree about Brosnan. I know I am one of the few,but I have disliked T2 since I saw it in a theater when it came out. Love the first and 3rd films. But haven't bothered watched T2 in close at 20 years. I understand. Avatar was a huge hit and I got bored with it. What if all three movies are total ass? Then you either have a low budget trilogy or a porno.
