From what I have heard and seen overseas, though, it's actually less for the themes and humor of Peanuts and more the fact that Snoopy is licensed by Sanrio in Japan (so Snoopy would be part of the Hello Kitty phenomenon there.) Indeed in Asia (and in many non-English countries), the comic is called "Snoopy" and people barely know about Charlie Brown or any of the other characters. They say yare yare instead of good grief. I wonder if Japanese audiences consider Lucy or Schroeder tsundere characters or Charlie Brown similar to Tenchi or Nobita from Doeraemon. May I mistranslate it, but "Yare yare" always came across to me as "Blah blah blah". Not sure what would be a better phrase for "Good grief" in Japanese though

Not sure what would be a better phrase for "Good grief" in Japanese though I think “Good grief” would be “Yoi Kanashimi.” That’d be a literal translation of the two words though, it’s not a phrase anyone says. “Yare yare” as a phrase is like a sarcastic “oh great”, “oh boy”, etc, so it or something like “komatta” are the translations used.

Had a buddy that lived in Japan for 8 years teaching English. Married a lady over there and moved back to the States. Learned from her how huge Peanuts is in Japan. She had all kinds of neat Peanuts stuff I had never seen. Not surprised Suzuki is a Peanuts fan. I was surprised as well how much Peanuts stuff there still is in stores.
