Two things. 1. Ermey is one of those guys where you know exactly what character he is playing the second he shows up. He is one of THOSE guys. That would typically mean a lack of range, but the way he managed to apply the same archetype in horror, comedy, drama contexts and more is nothing short of remarkable. 2. The story of his casting for Full Metal Jacket is great. Apparently he was just meant to consult on the guy cast as the drill instructor, Ermey recorded himself improvising insults and putdowns to cadets for several minutes in a row while being pelted with tennis balls, and didn't repeat himself once... Kubrick cast him immediately. That, friends, is f***ing badass, and his legacy would be made forever if he was only ever in this one movie. Got my knuckles all lined up for nothing. Sorry, ladies.

R. Lee Ermey was that iconic in Full Metal Jacket, that when most people think of a drill sergeant they'll automatically think of him.
Memorable in so much stuff including The Frighteners, and a film I have such a soft spot - Man Of The House (the cheerleading one)

I just watched Saving Silverman the other night and was remembering how awesome he is. It's a shame to read that he's passed just a couple days later. RIP to an icon.
