What are some silly options for leveling up you've seen? I know in Horizon you have to level up just to be able to pick up items while on a mount and also just to be able to whistle to get attention of enemies.

Any of them that result in you getting incredibly powerful skills or weapons long after you've already completed the main missions or storyline to the game, thus rendering such levelling up rather pointless.

Great Gospel was very much a completionist thing. Though I think the PC version let you use debug room shenanigans to get her back in your party.

It's amazing back in the day people were saying it had to be a way to bring her back without cheating. Video games without the net was a great thing wasn't it. Wouldn't have traded it for nothing

Final Fantasy 2 let you level up by canceling out after choosing to do something. Of course it also had the awful level up system where every skill had it's own level and to get health you had to get hit... but you could boost 3 out of the 4 of your people's attack bonuses up to max pretty quickly if you wanted to.

Yep. Final Fantasy 2 was pretty damned terrible... there's a good reason it was never released outside of Japan until like 2003.
