Is there any part of you that wishes you would have had even a brief run as a heel, and how do you feel you would've fared in that role? "I'll tell you a true story. Back in '91, I went to Vince and Pat Patterson and asked to do a turn and they both shut me down without hesitation. They said it would not work, I was the premier babyface, and I told them that I've been in the ring with the best heels in the business. I actually believed that I could work as a heel because I've been in the ring with the best of them. They said bottom line, it would probably hurt your career and they shut it down. Now, at the time guys I was a bit turned off. I was a bit disgruntled because I wanted to be able to work as a heel. At that time, I had been in the business I was approaching around 17 years and I knew I was getting into the twilight of my career and I just wanted to be able to experience working on the dark side. Being able to feel what that's like and I was upset about not being able to do it at the time. Looking back at it now, I'm happy and pleased that they did talk me out of it and not allow it. Like you said earlier, one of the few guys in the business that wrestled close to 20 years actively and stayed the same way as he started in the business. There's just a few of us that have done that and I'm happy to say that I'm one of those few guys now. I reflect back and I'm happy that I was turned down." wrestlinginc.com/wi/news/2018/0513/639832/ricky-steamboat-on-vince-mcmahon-instantly-shooting-down-his/

"Steamboat, you're the consummate baby face. I can send you out to the ring with a chainsaw and you can cut off both of Hulk Hogan's arms, and the fans just wouldn't believe it." -Patterson, apparently.

So we were denied a Steamboat-Skinner double turn. GREAT. THANKS, VINCE.

Apparently, he was supposed to turn heel in NWA-TNA during the storyline in which Ron Killings demanded a title match, but Ricky left.

Ah, '91; they couldn't turn him because their "put scales on him and pretend he didn't used to wrestle here before" plans were just too damn big.
All seriousness, Ricky was just too good to turn.

Did he even do anything in ‘91? All I remember is him dressed like a dragon on the jobber shows and blowing fire.

Steamboat was going to get into a program with DiBiase but he gave notice. They wanted him to put over IRS and Undertaker on his way out, he refused, and got fired on the spot. Apparently he was promised a main event push when a spot opened up but he grew impatient and was pissed off about money.

I can't even imagine him as a heel. I have no idea how that could have been booked.

Kinda funny that a guy named Richard Blood never was a heel. Yeah, I always thought that his real name was not only a great name for a wrestler but a name that screamed heel.

I know she became increasingly involved with his business affairs, along with wanting to be involved with her on the air, seemingly, leading to the whole "Family Man" thing there were pushing for when he went to go feud with Flair, with the unfortunate side effect of making him look like a bit of a wiener next to the "cool" Flair.

A shame and a blessing that we never got the heel turn I suppose. I remember reading an article on the long defunct Wrestleline website where many journalists and aspiring wrestlers used to submit articles for. A wrestling trainee wrote an article about attending a Ricky Steamboat workshop and how Ricky would teach kids the art of selling and Ricky played the role of cowardly heel and the trainees were shocked at how good Ricky looked as a heel. I suppose that's the closest we'll ever get.

Rick martel had a similar experience with Vince before his Model run.
