I know many prefer the trunks look, but I actually have generally dug the "Electric Neon Cowboy" look for him. I found it more visually interesting.

Totally off-topic but I'm surprised the WWF never did a post-Wrestlemania 5 house show loop with Hogan and Warrior against Savage and Rude

Savage didnt do any TV matches between No Hold Barred and Royal Rumble, so Rumble was the fisrt TV match he wore tights. Which makes sense since its a PPV His first match following the Royal Rumble was vs. Roddy Piper which was on Wrestlefest 90, He was transitioning at that point but doesn't have the tassles or cowboy hat and is wearing long duster type jackets with small tassels The next matches he had on TV were The Main Event vs Hogan., March 1990 Superstars vs Jim Powers and The Ultimate Challenge special vs Rhodes, all with long jackets and crown So Mania was the debut of the smaller jacket and long tassles and hes still in the crown at Summerslam, and then he was in a bandana at Saturday Nights Main Event in November and Survivor Series. So I think the cowboy hat debuted here, in December on Superstars vs Koko B Ware www.youtube.com/watch?v=pExpedlMCEs

I think with there being A, B and C house shows in one night, they had to split the stars up. I guess you could say it was a precursor to the brand split in many ways.

From trunks to the cowboy type outfits? We all know why he did Why did he transition to longer pants? Yes, is there some background on this? I don't think I've ever heard a reason for the change.

If we're speculating as to why he changed, he may have felt it was time to refresh his look. He had worn the trunks since he debuted in 1986 and pretty much maintained the same look for the rest of the 1980s. He had just taken on the king moniker, so it was a good time to change things up. I think I've heard Lanny Poffo say that the reason for wearing shirts more and more was because his physique was not the same after he stopped using steroids or whatever to help him get his physique.

Long tights would also make things easier from a maintenance perspective (less shaving, for example.)

RR He had the crown and than hat again at the first show he was on post rumble and think he stuck with it from than on.

He had the hat at RR 1991 backstage and a bandana during the run in, I don’t think he wore the crown again from around Oct 1990.

Why did he transition to longer pants? Probably just to add more color to his outfit. When you have tights there's only so much surface area for eye catching designs. fwiw I always wondered if the reason Kerry Von Erich started wearing warrior like tassels was because of the foot injury and to try and keep that area as covered and obscured as possible

Here is an early team photo for Survivor Series that was probably taken in early October at the earliest because Windham left at that time and was replaced in the match. Savage is dressed more like the 1990 Macho King we remember, though he still wore short trunks in the Survivor Series match and the next month for the No Holds Barred cage match. They would do those photoshoots months in advance back then to appear in WWF Magazine and whatnot. I have nothing to add other than this has got to be one of the worst teams I've ever seen.

Another reason people normally say is he was getting off steroids to try and have a kid. Also the reason why he retired for a while a year later. The new look was a distraction, and wearing a shirt wrestling hid the muscle mass change.
