From trunks to the cowboy type outfits? We all know why he did, but when did he debut the new look and was much mentioned? Did he ever wear trunks as a one off again? I can’t recall

That's a damn good question. When did Macho debut space cowboy attire?
Ahhh screw it! I know what's gonna happen now, I will now go to look for it and I will just end up watching Macho's promos like a cup of coffee in the big time

The first time I remember Macho wearing long tights was Royal Rumble 90. I can't quite put my finger on exactly when he dropped the crown and started wearing cowboy hats though. Somewhere around Survivor Series of that same year probably.

Somewhere around Survivor Series of that same year probably. He had the crown when he attacked Warrior in the Royal Rumbler 91. WM 7 he had the cowboy hat and same event lead to his face turn dropping the King gimmick completely. If not WM 7 sometime between the 91 rumble and WM 7.

I tried to find the first appearance with the hat but it's really hard cause it was not a sudden change in attire. He had transitional attire between old-school Macho and cowboy Macho with jacket sleeve fringe and a hat. There are some where he has classic costume pants and sleeveless shirt but no hat or crown so not sure if that counts. This is not going to be an easy quest cause someone has to go through whole '89-'90 to catch the right moment.

This is going to be hard to pin down because it likely happened during a promo on one of the jobber shows.

Macho King was already wearing the hat and classic costume pants and sleeveless in 1990. Even the fringe jacket was there from time to time. That's why I say it's so hard to pin point the actual debut cause he evolved.

Well I looked up 91 Even results and than youtube because the next event Savage wrestled on post Royal Rumble was MSG on Jan 21st against Warrior in a cage. I youtubed that and guess what. link Savage is wearing the Cowboy hat. He had the crown when he attacked Warrior in the Royal Rumbler 91. This match I linked too shows the hat.

I'm trying to nail it down as close as I can. He wore trunks for "No Holds Barred: The Match" which was shot on December 12, 1989. He had switched to tights by Royal Rumble (January 21, 1990) the next month. So, it would seem it was either in late December 1989 or in January 1990. It's not so easy to track down the weekly shows like Superstars and Wrestling Challenge, but he might have debuted the long tights in the weeks between the December 12 and January 21 of the next year.

The thing that I don't understand is why in the video games like Super Wrestlemania or Royal Rumble, he wore long tights and no shirt, when during that time, he was wearing the long tights and muscle shirts. I know he wore long tights and no shirt in WCW, well, until 1999.

Why did he transition to longer pants?

I think Royal Rumble 1990 is when he started wearing long tights as he still had trunks at Survivor Series 89, No Holds Barred, and I believe his match with Duggan on the January SNME. He might have started wearing them on TV leading up to Rumble but Savage didn't work many TV matches from 88 onward so I don't think so. He didn't start wearing the cowboy hats until around Summerslam 90 as he was still wearing the crown until then.

Yeah, it just seems like a natural progression to me. From Macho Man to Macho King to Space Cowboy. He probably wanted to keep the hats after the crown because it helped to cover up that he was balding, it's just the outfits got flashier.

I think it was early 1990, the last show I can recall he wore the short tights at the No Holds Barred match in December of 89, then by January 1990 he switched to the long tights.

He had the short tights and capes until the end of 1989, shortly into his Macho King reign.
From 1990 onward he wore the long tights (I swear Rumble 90 was the first time I saw him in those...a very colorful and almost tropical looking pair), and the jacket - which started as a jacket/cape combo, but eventually became jackets with had really long tassles on the sleeves that shortened, a bit, after a while.
The crown, and that spiffy scepter with the glass orb on the end, was part of his ensemble until maybe the summer. He had the cowboy hat at SSlam that year and from there I think it was the more familiar look he'd keep into his WCW run.

Offshoot of this topic...I remember Savage introduced a variant of his short tights at Survivor Series '89, had a crown over "Macho King" on the back....but some weird kind of new design on the front. Not the stars, it was something else. I'd like a clear look at that variant.

Here is an early team photo for Survivor Series that was probably taken in early October at the earliest because Windham left at that time and was replaced in the match. Savage is dressed more like the 1990 Macho King we remember, though he still wore short trunks in the Survivor Series match and the next month for the No Holds Barred cage match. They would do those photoshoots months in advance back then to appear in WWF Magazine and whatnot.
