It’s tough to see where he would fit in exactly in today’s WWE. He was shuffling down the card before he left. Of course if he ever comes back it will be with much fanfare and a big storyline. However, if he stuck around it might be quite different.

It's hard to picture what he would have done had he stayed around, beyond the planned Triple H match at WM30. He might have left on more amicable terms sooner rather than later, anyway.

provided he stayed healthy I'd guess he'd be in the spot of always being either the Upper Mid Card or Main Event slot.

If he was still there it'd be because he wanted it, and Punk in that mood is simply too driven and too unwilling to back down to not be around the upper card / main event level, I think.
Sliding downwards was facilitated by him really not caring to make noise as much.

I see him as being Orton level.

Honestly, if he'd met his career goal of main eventing WrestleMania, I can see him starting to wind down post-WM30. If he was even still an active wrestler by this point, it'd probably be on a part-time basis at most.

No, he'd have left and returned two or three times by now after lengthy layoffs to get surgery and heal up from the wear and tear so would be a lot fresher than someone like Ziggler who has been a constant presence.

I refuse to believe Punk's massive ego would allow him to gracefully move down the card and let other more talented guys have their turn. He would have found something to throw a bitch fit about and walk out.

He'd be dead if the staph infection was left untreated...
To this day I believe that he would've returned years ago if they didn't fired him on his f***ing wedding day. That was complete bullshit and a low class move.
I think he would've been the top babyface with Bryan's absence and Cena being phased out. I think that Roman's push would've been delayed for a couple of years.
I also think that he would be retiring this year if he stayed. Punk is turning forty this year, he has a cracked skull with dozens of concussions, probably has no acl left on both knees, his back is held together by duck tape at this point. I can't believe he's even cleared to fight.

I find that incredibly hard to picture. dude was still the second or third biggest guy in the company when he left. that kind of thing tends to happen more to guys who shouldn't have been in the main event to begin with like Del Rio or Swagger.

If he was still there I imagine he would be on a Cena or Jericho type deal by this point. Show up, work a program around one of the major ppvs, end up putting some people over, then take some time off to pursue other interests. He’d be a semi-major focal point of the show’s whenever he’s there, but not in the title picture.
This is all a big if, because it’s clear that being in the wwe bubble made him miserable, but maybe a part-time schedule would make that an easier pill to swallow.

Here's my question: why are we treating "CM Punk as a strong upper midcarder" as such a horrible scenario?

As was said before I think he'd be gone to be honest, although it'd be more amicable

If he was still there now? He would be an upper carder and he SHOULD be. It'd be five years after even the tail end of his big run.
He'd be in the Jericho role.

Pretty sure if he wasnt dead due to negligence he would always be in the main event.
Vince saw him as a top guy.Just not THE top guy.Even when everyon was upset(me included)he lost the title to push ROCK VS CENA. He was still a main event role.
Triple H at WM? That is a top main eventer match. People may forget Punk was very protected. No way he would be in the Jericho role.

I think if WWE didn't sour him on wrestling, he might still be out of WWE by now but still doing more wrestling appearances. Sort of like Jericho where he's in WWE one show, and NJPW the next.

I'd think he'd gone full time but be on better terms with the company.
