#20 is up, and it's Doozy Bots - the first attempt to market Gundam to the West.

In the hands of a better toy company and not one in financial trouble, the idea of action figures with a glowstick gimmick could be done better.

The glow sticks seem like a neat idea, but strike me as something that would end in choking or kids biting them open, killing the company with lawsuits. If there wasn't a risk, some other company would have ripped it off rather than sticking with more costly electronics.

I would love it if someone compiled the Gi-Joe family tree, detailing how many lines span off from the original 12 inch doll, and the lines that came from spin-offs of spinoffs. Action man, Microman, Henshin cyborg, Diaclone, Transformers, Lords of light, Micronauts, Blockman, Diakron, Action Force, the Brave Saga... The list is seemingly endless.

Or if someone compiled all the knockoff Joe lines, especially in the 80s, because it seemed like everybody was making a 3.75" action figure line of soldiers and stuff.

I miss the weird attempts to import Japanese toylines into the west where they'd just completely reinvent them to try and make them more palatable. Sometimes you'd get Transformers or Gobots, sometimes you'd get stretchoid warriors.

Always good stuff. And glad Toy Galaxy has stayed so light hearted; the other channel I used to watch bout 80s toys Retroblasting got so weird and douchey about Star Wars I unsubscribed.

I'll never not find it funny how Hasbro let the Joe line die twice in the exact same way: Introducing aliens, cyborgs, dinosaurs, and size/brand changes. Always good stuff. And glad Toy Galaxy has stayed so light hearted; the other channel I used to watch bout 80s toys Retroblasting got so weird and douchey about Star Wars I unsubscribed. Yeah, I dunno what's going on with Retro, but he's gotten quite unpleasant in the last few months. It's a shame, I loved his toyline/toon retrospectives.

Same here, his stuff was always fun and informative, but the videos around the time of the last Star Wars just got unpleasant.

A bit bummed he didn’t touch upon another planned space expansion for Joe in ‘95 to go along with the Manimals. Namely, the Replicators, a subset with familiar Joes and Cobras being replaced by aliens and the figures would do a flip-morph gimmick to reflect this.

I still have my 1994 JoeCon guidebook which is chock full of info & pics of the cancelled toys. What a way to find out GI Joe is cancelled -- going to the convention (USS Intrepid, NYC) and finding out in the event's handbook that there'll be no more toys and here's all the stuff they cancelled (to be fair, none of it wow'd me back then either; I find it more fascinating in my 40s in the historical sense).

The Invaders, who ironically predate Cobra, should have been a stern reminder.

The Invaders, who ironically predate Cobra, should have been a stern reminder. The Intruders, not Invaders. The history of Joe's downfall in the toy aisle is interesting to me, because Hasbro repeated the exact same mistakes TWICE, and not just one mistake. As the original 12" line started faltering, they tried to prop it up with cyborgs (Atomic Man), aliens, monsters and dinosaurs (the Intruders, Gor, Terron) as well as re-brandings and size scale changes (Adventure Team, Super Joe) As the Real American Hero line started faltering, they tried to prop it up with cyborgs (Robo-Joe), aliens, monsters and dinosaurs (Manimals, Lunartix, Dino-Hunters) as well as re-brandings and size scale changes (Sgt. Savage, Extreme)
