Speaking as a queer male, I love the Dream. I don't think the vaguely effeminate aspects of his character are homophobic at all. He's a heel because he's an asshole, and the fans both love booing him and give him face pops for doing awesome shit. Braying asshole or not, it was obvious on Tough Enough that Clark is a student of the game. And you can tell that when they gave him this gimmick, he knew that it was his moment to Dustin Rhodes this shit and just wear that gimmick's skin every second that he was on camera. He *gets* what having this kind of gimmick is about, and while his moveset is not extraordinary and he occasionally botches (he's still green), the vast majority of his stuff isn't just done but executed pretty much perfectly. Were it not for Kairi, Dream would have the best elbow drop in WWE. It's like it's from a textbook. Velveteen Dream is a very modern interpretation of the classic wrestling villain. Arrogant, confident, infuriating, and he does have a streak of effeminacy, but he's not baiting the crowd with that, like Goldust or Adrian Street or Adrian Adonis did. It's incidental to the rest of him. To me, he seems more like a Russell Westbrook/Paul Pogba/Cam Newton, 'I can wear what I like and I can act how I like, because I'm secure in my masculinity' sort of character, just turned up louder. I think it's quite easy to see how this same Dream character could be a babyface, by playing up the Prince-alike, weird charm aspects of him. I just hope that Vince and his crack squad of main roster writers don't end up going 'lol, he acts gay!' as their main identifier of him.

I actually think he would do better on the main roster. NXT seems to be wrestling based while the WWE is still an character based product.
Vince McMahon helped devlop Goldust, which was about 5000x more overt than Dream

I can see him going very far.
Just don't go too flamboyant and turn him into a joke like The Artist Formerly Known as Goldust or go too preachy like Nia Jax is unfortunately becoming, so kinda like Goldust's first couple years with a few tweaks here and there to keep it with the times.
It's the kind of gimmick you have to go all out instead of pussyfooting around.

It really depeneds. He could make it work, but if he got called up tomorrow, I would expect him to get put into a Tye Dillinger position.
Timing would be everything on how he'd be used.

Its modern day WWE. Michael Cole will espouse how great it is, how revolutionary having a gay wrestler is. They'll talk about it so much well all be sick of it and hate him and then they'll give up on him because they'll say they tried everything and he couldn't get over.

I think he's got a bright future, so long as WWE doesn't try to spin his gimmick into something tacky or offensive.
My only gripe is to name to his "Purple Rainmaker" elbow drop. Don't get me wrong, his execution is great and I get the name reference, but there is only one Rainmaker to me and it's not Velveteen's.

He'll be turned into a blunt stereotype. I'd love to think differently but, that's exactly what's going to happen.

Velveteen Dream's (Purple) Rainmaker > Okada's Rainmaker.

Vince will f*** it up or (hopefully) at the least temporarily hinder him.
