I never understood or liked Hogan and beefcake teaming at mania 9. Why did a guy who had not been a full time wrestler since wrestlemania 6 and was seen as completely fragile (beefcake) warrant a semi main event status at wrestlemania? Hogans big return after a years absence to team with beefcake ..who he had not been affiliated with on screen since 89 and someone who's credibility had fallen mightily since the accident.
So what if it was savage instead? An unlikely reunion of the mega powers against money inc? Savage could stay relevant instead of being pushed to color commentary which pushed him to wcw. Thoughts?

I think you're underestimating just how over Beefcake was in his prime and how big of a deal it was to a lot of long-term fans to see him return after his accident.

I think there were better uses of Macho Man on the Wrestlemania card. He could have been put in the title match against Bret, face Razor Ramon in a blowoff to the Flair/Perfect/Razor feud or even have a match with Jerry Lawler as they had been feuding on commentary before Wrestlemania 9.
I still cant work out why they had Savage on commentary during a period when they had so little star power.

With Hogan and Beefcake their real life friendship had been acknowledge on WWF TV so they already had that connection. So it made perfect sense for Hogan to team with his friend after he was attacked.

I often wonder if Hogan was angling for a rehash of the Mega Powers angle, with a Beefcake betrayal, especially considering that's essentially what happened when they all jumped to WCW.

Hell Savage could have been used against the Undertaker instead of Giant Gonzales and could we could have been spared that god awful match.

As mentioned Beefcake was very much over in his day, and him and Hogan were on screen together as recent as the SNME the year prior to WM8.

Let's ask Ed fn Leslie in one of his many failed gimmicks as the Zodiac.
Should Savage have replaced you? Yes. Did you ever drew a nickle? No. Was that cocaine the police found? Yes.

"Spin the wheel choose the gimmick" Ed Leslie is one of the things WCW did right. They had a blast blasting the guy. Good stuff.
