How many of you were a member of Columbia House or BMG Music Service? I was a Columbia House member in 1991. I thought it was a great deal with the 12 "free" CDs for a penny or whatever it was. i didn't factor in the CDs they sent you automatically, the high shipping costs, etc. "Return this card if you don't want next month's selection". Bah...

Believe it or not, Columbia House still exists, but now exclusively deals in movies.

I was a member of the BMG Music Club circa ‘97/‘98. I was also bad about returning that “Featured Selection” card.
I was surprised to learn that BMG was still going until 2009.

I built my whole collection from High School by signing up to BMG, depending on the deal you would get 5 free then just buy 1 and get 2 more free, then you could cancel and do it all over again. Plus if you signed up friends you'd get like 2 or 3 more free. I was a member of Columbia House, too. They had different selections of certain artists, which is the only reason I ever joined Columbia House since they made you buy like 4 overpriced CDs over the next 2 years but you would get the 12 free immediately, so it kinda worked out.
The thing I hate is that I no longer have any of the old catalogues. I would love to find some from 1997-2003 or so with was when I was so heavily into it.

Wikipedia has lists of the Billboard top albums from each year so that should give you a good idea of what was available.

BTW, got super nostalgic for the E! promo at the beginning.

I was literally just talking about this with a co worker yesterday. I ran the hustle with BMG and Columbia House a few times. I got a lot of great albums that way and it really kickstarted my CD collection in a big way. I think I only ever ended up buying one full priced cd the whole time.
