The Dungeon of Doom / Hulkamania vignettes that get made fun of these days:"Well, that wasn't my character driven usual person. Look at who I had. I was using guys that Hogan was comfortable with. I was using cartoonish guys he had worked with and was comfortable with. I was doing this so he would be comfortable with me because of my mind. When he first got there, I knew he wouldn't draw money as a baby face. You've got to realize. I'm going to go ask Hulk Hogan who revolutionized the wrestling business to turn heel and give up all his merchandise and all his extra curricular activities that he's making money on? Who am I? So, I'd better make him comfortable because he's bringing in guys that are his friends. So, why don't I lump them together instead of putting them in every other segment? You know what I mean? There was Tenta, Beefcake... I could go on down the line. Isn't it better to put them all in one segment and get it over with? Wouldn't it be? I mean, you could go to the doctor and get one shot in your ass or you could get six shots. You get it over with! But, it was strategically designed to get him comfortable with me and trust me." Convincing Hulk Hogan to turn heel at Bash at the Beach 1996:"Well, I'll tell you how I did it. We were in Chicago, Hulk came out and 'Mean' Gene Okerlund saved the night because they booed Hogan out of the building. Gene said, 'This is a somber mood. You can hear the people.' I went to Hogan and said, 'There's no turning back now. We've got to turn you.' Everybody was against it. Everybody was in his ear! That night, he brought his agent to my house. He, Hogan, stayed in my house. I drove him down the street to the event as the event started.I was going to make sure no one touched him or got to him. And, the rest is history!" wrestlinginc.com/wi/news/2018/0522/641118/kevin-sullivan-on-if-wwe-should-turn-roman-reigns-heel/

I believe that.
Hogan needed to see that his way of cartoon wrestling died and he needed something new. I think the catalyst was the reaction of uncensored 96 and what a piece of shit match Hogan did on that cage against 8 guys.

I heard this said in the New Generation Project podcast review of Uncensored 96, and I'm paraphrasing: "Once I've seen Hogan, as part of a duo, essentially destroy 8 guys without much effort, what's my incentive to ever need to see him in a singles match again? Who could possibly beat him one on one?"

The saddest part is that according to Sullivan, the original match was supposed to be Hogan and Savage against Giant and Sullivan in a cage, with Sullivan taking the pin, then the orange goblin just started to put more shit in.

Evidently so, considering that they haven't uploaded an episode since November.

I always thought the Dungeon of Doom was a campy, dumb, but ultimately kind of harmless fun sort of thing that took an interesting spin on a wrestling version of regular TV's villain of the week. It was cheesy and stupid, but it kept Hogan busy and away from doing his Hogan shit elsewhere, and everything Sullivan says here sounds super reasonable and logical instead of like working bullshit, so I can believe that was all the plan. It always felt like something to pacify Hogan and keep his politics contained for as long as possible.

If it was indeed the plan to put all of Hogan's friends in one group to feud with him and keep them from being over saturated everywhere else than that was subtly genius and changes the way I view the Dungeon of Doom.

Do you want the dungeon of doom officially from when Sullivan became the Task Master
Or do you want pre early signs of dungeon of doom with the 3 faces of fear

From the 3 faces of fear onward. So you technically want Clash of The Champions XXVIII which is when Hulk first got attacked by the masked man
October is when Brutus gets unmasked at Halloween Havoc 1994 and him and Sullivan along with Earthquake form the faces of fear that month

When was the debut of the Dungeon of Doom? I need to rewatch this nonsense. lol It starts after Slamboree 1995, and more or less goes on like that until Uncensored 1996. After that, the group downsizes, and shifts focus away from Hogan into a war with the Four Horsemen.

It's funny that Leslie and Tenta go from Avalanche and the Butcher to Zodiac and the Shark and we were supposed to believe they were different people.

Even the f***ing Honky Tonk Man got an expensive looking vignette to announce his debut. Everyone of Hogan's useless friends got a contract. Kevin also became Hogan's personal jobber.

Wow, Kevin Sullivan was a genius. I never ever thought of the Dungeon as being a comfortable distraction for Hogan. Bravo. So you technically want Clash of The Champions XXVIII which is when Hulk first got attacked by the masked man October is when Brutus gets unmasked at Halloween Havoc 1994 and him and Sullivan along with Earthquake form the faces of fear that month
It's funny that Leslie and Tenta go from Avalanche and the Butcher to Zodiac and the Shark and we were supposed to believe they were different people. ....I vaguely recall this weird semi-fan/semi-legit theory from back then that Leslie reconciled with Hogan after the Butcher feud and became the Zodiac so that Hogan had a plant in the Dungeon.
