I have heard more than one wrestling insider say something like "The money isn't in the face beating the heel. It's in the face chasing the heel." And while that may be, those chases can eventually frustrate fans and drive them away. In fact, WWE/F has largely been a babyface champion territory.
Why is it so difficult to flip the script from a title chase to a title defense? Can you think of any transitions that were done successfully?

Were they a part of a "heel to face"or "face to heel" title transition that was creatively and financially successful?

I'm surprised it isn't an exact quote from Austin. He preferred chasing the title rather than being champ, he turned down the ECW Title because of it

It's the status quo for whatever that insider was exposed to first.
A couple of examples:
The WWWF/WWF/WWE has always been a face promotion and generally had long face title reigns with short heel runs. Ergo, Vince builds the heel factory for Hogan in the 80s.
Bruce Prichard was Houston wrestling which was the opposite, so he will always favor the face chasing the title.
And then I'd argue strongly that the AWA was sent on their decline by adhering to their theory of face chasing the title and not deviating from it when they refused to put the title on Hogan.

It's a much easier story to have the good guy be the guy chasing the belt. Although to be honest, the belts have been so devalued in the past 20 years, I don't know what the best story to tell is anymore.

That period, from Michaels to Austin to Hunter to The Rock is probably the only example I can think of. Each guy had a significant run on top, and it's a balance of heels and faces.
