I've been trying to get into hockey lately. I'm from Texas, where football is king.
What states/cities are the most passionate about hockey?

Vegas, obviously.
J/k. Montreal and Toronto it really is a way of life. Quebec too once they get a team again. Boston, Detroit, and Philly always have very strongly supported teams. Tampa has proven to be a hot market. Chicago is on the borderline, as their bandwagon days are over, but they may still be a very strong market even when the team is down. St. Louis is a growing hockey market. NY is really only into the Rangers, but they've been kinda falling off in interest it seems like to me for whatever reason.

The thing with hockey is that in a lot of cities while the fanbases are smaller than for other sports, they're VERY dedicated. A good example of this is the Kings. Yeah, the Kings' fanbase isn't as big as the one for the Dodgers or the Lakers, but the Kings fans that are there are super dedicated, enough to sell out the Staples Center on a regular basis.
The Devils and Islanders are also similar to where they're very much the second teams to the Rangers (and NYC is probably first and foremost, a baseball town), but their fans are diehard. Big part of the reason why the Isles are looking to move back to a smaller venue in the revamped Nassau Colosseum is to win back the support of the Long Island diehards who protested the move to Brooklyn, which also backfired since they didn't exactly gain any new fans there.

And for some reason Nashville.

In DC over the 2000s, hockey got popular down here. It's actually second to football.

Used to be every day I'd hear Blackhawks stuff on the news. One off season and you don't hear a peep about them. The hockey fandom, however, is very passionate. But they are also the type of fan who hate new fans.

This. As a diehard Ranger fan, Hockey has a very fraternal fan base which imo adds to its charm. Very few casual fans. I think that’s why it’s the best sport to watch live.
