AND the dulcet, velvety voice of Gary Owens!
Seriously, I had no idea about the pilot.

THANK YOU, I vaguely remember seeing this when I was a kid but everybody would just look at me like I was insane.

Apparently they removed it because MGM thought the character looked too similar to Inspector Clouseau. The fact they were both bumbling detectives didn't help matters.

I definitely remember seeing this on TV after the show aired. Not sure if it was just circulated a lot on Canadian TV or some other reason.

If I had to venture a guess I'd say it was an intentional choice on the creators' parts. That said, it's funny that, to avoid any legal issues there, they opted instead to make him Maxwell Smart.

I saw the version with Don Adams' voice a few times in my area, not sure if still local or if the show reached Nick or Family Channel by that time.
Wasn't there another VA who recorded the pilot? Must check my Lost Media Wiki facts....(EDIT: I did. Jesse White is who I was thinking of)
(EDIT #2: I didn't catch it at the time, but when reran w/Adams, they stuck in a line about the mustache being a "disguise" Gadget was wearing on this mission)

Oh and the pilot was a big obsession as there was one point where it looked like Dr. Claw would turn around. Alas, he remained faceless as he would for the rest of the series. (NO Movie, you don't count! The action figs and SNES game are a bit better, but...no. Not canon.)

This thread made me think of something. The word "mustachioed" doesn't get used nearly as much as it should.

Is it on the DVD sets by chance? I think it might be, but I'm not sure about it.

AND the dulcet, velvety voice of Gary Owens! Seriously, I had no idea about the pilot. And Morgul as the Friendly Drelb!

Is it later, or was it in yet another revision of the pilot? I also must say, I prefer the closing credits to the pilot somehow. Maybe it's not having Dr. Claw's "I'll get you next time..." line being spoken over a scene of Chief Quimby...while Quimby is talking. Leading really young me to wonder if Quimby was actually a double agent and that HE was Claw.

Doesn't feel right to me. And Penny's voice being different... but I do remember his moustache. Like it was a disguise, that I remember pretty well.
I used to LOVE Gadget as a kid.
