I created a smart playlist in itunes were it only features songs that go for seven minutes or more and it turns out I have over 200 of them.
But I have to exclude songs that appear on the last tracks of CDs that have about 3 minutes of silence before the secret track starts.

Led Zeppelin's concert versions of Dazed and Confused are really good, and they could stretcht the song out to 45 minutes.

"Dopesmoker" by Sleep, almost an hour
and I guess no one here has ever heard of Godspeed You! Black Emperor or the Silver Mount Zion, who's songs usually run between 15 and 25 minutes or so

Queensryche doesn't shy away from long songs if it fits the album. Suite Sister Mary is around 9-10 minutes. A few people mentioned Dream Theatre. This is a video of both bands combining to cover another long ass song, originally by The Who.

Not as long as some others mentioned but American Pie. And I always think a song that is over 10 minutes = Pretentious.

Song length has nothing to do with pretentiousness. Especially not as some rule.

I like you, so please don't take it as an insult, but it struck me as a dumb comment. Why is ten minutes the magic cutoff number, and if a song is any longer it is because of pretentiousness? It makes no sense.

It makes no sense. I think it has less to do with being a dumb comment and more to do with plain old vanilla Trolling. You know...making a statement just to cause trouble...not to give a point or add to a debate or anything.

I just think most people make really long songs to show off sometimes. It's like a lot of Prog-rock from the 70's. A lot of people think it means more artistically if they do a long song. Can anyone honestly tell me they can listen to a 37 minute song and not get slightly bored with it?
