Doug for the relateableness, rugrats for its creativity.
Never saw Rocko.
Ren and Stimpy always looked awful. Even as a kid I never liked gross out humour

Rocko now. And it was probably second back then. As a kid, I LOVED Ren and Stimpy. But, that show has aged terribly. I am big on Doug, I love Rugrats. Now, I would probably rank Ren and Stimpy last. I don’t know what I was thinking, I was a weird ass kid.

I enjoyed all four of the original Nicktoons to varying degrees, but Rocko was and still is my favorite to this day.
TBH I preferred a lot of the later Games episodes over the earlier John K. directed cartoons. Rocko was just more consistent, it had plenty of adult humor past the radar, and the title character was a million times more likable/sweeter than R&S.

I loved Rocko. I haven't watched it in years, so I don't know if I'd still like it, but I probably would. I never gave Rugrats or Doug a chance because the premises didn't appeal to me. I tried to get into Ren & Stimpy because a lot of my friends were into it, but the gross-out humor was a huge turnoff.

Of the four original Nicktoons, which one was your favorite. While I liked all of them, my favorite back in the day was R&S, however, i've found that Rocko holds up a lot better. I'd even argue it was pretty much the original Regular Show (mundane things like buying a tv or going on a plane ride go into strange directions). This. R&S not holding up is partially me no longer liking the show's style as I got older. Plus Rocko was more consistent in general...can't help that two of the other three show's change in company destroyed the quality.

I would probably rate them as such: Rocko Doug Rugrats Ren and Stimpy
Love all 4. Never got to watch as much Ren and Stimpy, probably because my parents wouldn't let me.

Oooohh good question. I was a big Ren and Stimpy fan and enjoyed Doug. Overall, Rocko I think was the best.
1) Rocko 2) Ren and Stimpy 3) Doug 4) Rugrats

The Nickelodeon run of Doug was a lot of fun. The Beets rule!

Rocko is firmly number one, followed by Ahhhh Real Monsters, then Rugrats. I never got into Ren and Stimpy, and Doug annoyed the hell out of me.

The thing about Ren and Stimpy was, it was kinda blah for a lot of it, looking back. But then there were Those Scenes. Ren going crazy with his ice cream bar. The Happy Happy Joy Joy song. When they try to sell rubber nipples to Mr. Horse. Ren lying in bed plotting to kill Stimpy. Beyond how shocking it was to see a cartoon where the characters openly talk about murder, they were striking and weird and hilarious.
It wasn't anticomedy, but it was awkward and dark and... not necessarily even trying to be funny in any obvious way. It was uncomfortable. I'm not sure what else there was like it... maybe those especially weird Kids in the Hall sketches, where an old man eats sausage, or something, but certainly not much. Those scenes HAVE aged well, because they've inspired copycats all over cartoons today. You'll totally see a very similar thing where a character goes psycho on MLP or Steven Universe or Adventure Time or whatever. Lots of times they'll hold a beat a little too long, or they'll linger on someone talking to themselves for no apparent reason but to be weird and disturbing and funny, and that's definitely a Ren and Stimpy influence. Not even to mention Adult Swim.
(I think that humor from Ren and Stimpy almost certainly came from indie comics like Milk and Cheese or Life In Hell, or indie animation like Bill Plympton, so it wasn't TOTALLY new. But it was definitely super new for kids' TV!)
okay now that is more than enough space praising John K!

I also find it funny that Billy West worked on Doug and Ren and Stimpy at the same time, two shows with wildly different tones.

3 of the 4 are ones I enjoy greatly (except for Doug)...but I was always a Ren & Stimpy guy (except when they had that Ren & Stimpy Adult Hour on Spike TV).

1. Rocko - By far 2. Rugrats - Watched this show more than any of the other 3 shows combined. It was on all. the. time. 3. Doug - Probably a better show than Rugrats but Rugrats gets the nod for being fried into my brain 4. Ren & Stimpy - Was way too weird a show to me as a kid. Never have gone back and watched it though
