The story goes that Sid Vicious was considered first for this new gaijin character. But the man who would become Vader was just better. So he got it instead. Not trying to start a war since Sid is well-loved here, but they got it right for sure if that story is indeed true. The way I have always heard that story was Jim Hellwig AKA Warrior was considered first to be Vader. That's what I have always heard too. It was offered to Warrior but he ended up with WWE instead.

Thinking of his name, I'm still amazed to this day that nobody (to my knowledge, anyway) ever got a cease and desist letter from Lucasfilm over the whole "Vader" part. I'm sure LucasFilm raised an eyebrow, but not much they could do. Both Big Van and Darth were loosely based on the same Japanese folklore character, and "Vader" was a phonetic corruption of his name (Wada). Also, "vader" is a real word in Dutch, and means "father." So, if I can ask here because I'm too lazy to look it up, what exactly is the Japanese folklore that Big Van and Darth are based on?

So Big Van is also Luke's father?

WCW really missed a crap opportunity by not having him coming out with a van complete with a big mural of his face on the side during his entrances.

Didn't Vince want to call him The Mastodon before deciding to stick with Vader? In his most recent shoots (post heart failure diagnosis), Vader regretted not becoming the Mastodon. He figures Vince McMahon would have pulled the trigger on his championship push if Vince owned the character and opened up streams of merchandising along with it. Edit - here it is youtu.be/vOiMR1wNwRY
