I believe it was Fall Brawl 93 where the name change occurred. What caused it?

Yeah its funny when I was growing up in the early 90s I figured Van was his "first" name and the Big was his nickname and just called him Van Vader all the time

(Not necessarily because it was thought to be his first name, but because it was a heckuva moniker.) Vader also used to refer to him. Never just “Big Van” though. All three words, the last two words, or the last word. And honestly, that appeals to me when you can carry all three options interchangeably and just as effectively. His name was one of the best wrestling names of all time.

I still remember that typed Cactus Jack promo where they had to edit out "Big Van" and how awkward it looked.

What's the origin of the name, anyways? I never heard about it really. I know Van can be a first name, and the Vader part kinda makes sense, but it just seems like a strange name for a wrestler to be given.

The story goes that Sid Vicious was considered first for this new gaijin character. But the man who would become Vader was just better. So he got it instead. Not trying to start a war since Sid is well-loved here, but they got it right for sure if that story is indeed true.

Thinking of his name, I'm still amazed to this day that nobody (to my knowledge, anyway) ever got a cease and desist letter from Lucasfilm over the whole "Vader" part.

The way I have always heard that story was Jim Hellwig AKA Warrior was considered first to be Vader.

I'm sure LucasFilm raised an eyebrow, but not much they could do. Both Big Van and Darth were loosely based on the same Japanese folklore character, and "Vader" was a phonetic corruption of his name (Wada). Also, "vader" is a real word in Dutch, and means "father."

Didn't Vince want to call him The Mastodon before deciding to stick with Vader?
