"It was in '96 when Eric Bischoff took over in WCW, and I was renewing my contract, and he gave me a sweet deal, but WWE gave me an amazing deal. And not only did they give me an amazing deal, but Vince gave me everything at the time. I got a signing bonus, a guaranteed contract, and he allowed me… well, one of the things I wanted in my contract was that I wanted my wife to fly everywhere I flew, which was unheard of in pro wrestling, like, taking your wife on the road. Remember, at the time she's not even part of the show. She's not even part of the WWE - she's just my wife, but I wanted her with me because I did not want to go through a divorce. I watched too many people ruin their marriages being on the road and I had already been into drugs, and the women, and all of the craziness in life. I did not want that to happen to my new marriage, so I put that as part of my contract. I said, 'I want guaranteed money, I want a signing bonus, and I want my wife to go everywhere I go.' And Vince said, 'I have never heard that before' and he gave me everything I wanted."
"A funny story was that to sign my contract Vince wanted to fly me from Atlanta to New York to talk about the new character and going from Johnny B. Badd. They sent me my plane ticket and I noticed it was only the one ticket. In other words, it was just for me. And I called Vince, I go, 'Vince, we made a deal - my wife goes everywhere I go.' And he goes, 'to sign a contract?' I go, 'she goes everywhere,' so they sent me another ticket. And I said, 'Vince, what about this? Why don't you have my wife be my valet? I mean, she's very pretty and I think she'd do very well.' And he said, 'well, let's just concentrate on you.'
"Anyways, we fly up to New York and we walk into Vince's office with my ex-wife, Rena. And he looked at her and he just goes, 'I have got to put her on TV.' I mean, it was like he just knew that at this moment he saw this character, Sable, and we had all these names that we were trying to decide from and we chose the name, Sable. And that's how her pro wrestling career started. And, of course, was huge and did so well. I'm just so proud of her going from never doing anything like that to becoming a major superstar in the business. So that's how that happened."

This is the deal Mero negotiated that got him heat with Mick Foley - who wasn't being paid as much as Mero at the time and wasn’t promised guaranteed money like Mero was either.

"I wanted my wife to fly everywhere I flew" "Why don't you have my wife be my valet? I mean, she's very pretty and I think she'd do very well"
Sable even overshadows his contract signing story
*Note* I get why he wanted Sable involved but you gotta admit she killed him

I love how both Stone Cold and Mick Foley were partially fueled to some of the greatest heights in pro wrestling history by a burning desire to prove they were worth more than a scrub like Marc Mero.

I still don't understand why the boys in the back were pissed off? Nash and Hall keep on claiming they changed the business by getting guarenteed contracts, but the honest trust is MARC MERO is the man who got them these contracts and he should be praised, not ripped for this.
Petty.

I get the hostility, but I don't fault Mero to for taking a shot. I'd be more upset with Vince/Talent relations for giving it to him.

Sable became a bigger star and he got a divorce and ultimately released/not renewed. There’s regular failing and then there’s Mero failing. Goddamn.

And the first contracts Vince offered with guaranteed money (which were a direct response to WCW's hiring practices) had a skimpy "downside guarantee" with nowhere near the perks Mero was able to somehow gain from Vince.

There is the Neville level and then there is the Mero level...except the Mero level is a tutorial level that never ends
And this is the type of deal I expect he will toss at Bucks and Kenny.
Guaranteed money huge downside larger chunk of merch and creative controll

I'm not opposed to Mero getting himself the best possible deal, but damn Vince was way off the mark for thinking Mero was going to be one of his big superstars.

Before that, they were very much a pair. The Wildman was a lively, charismatic character that was every bit deserving of being in the IC title scene. Without injuries, he would have done really well.

Mero was AAA talent that WWE has managed not to utilize. Guy had a comic superhero like body and build, was actually good in the ring (unlike others who were mad at him, much better than Austin for example) and he could carry any character. Guy had attitude written all over him but WWE dropped the ball under the pressure from other big stars and poor creative. Just like they almost did with Austin who was so close to have his WWE venture end on a lower scale than Mark's.

I know when they signed him, they wanted Johnny B Badd, but if they could’ve come up with a gimmick close enough to that to utilise his charisma properly (because I really don’t think the Wildman character did), he would’ve done a lot better.
He was good in the ring, technically sound, could fly when you needed him to, but Johnny B Badd showed the dude had a ton of charisma just waiting to come out, and with the Wildman he couldn’t really get into what that character was meant to be.

I don’t dispute that Mero was a solid talent at the time, but in no way was he deserving of such a contract. You don’t give main event contracts to mid-card talent, and Mero was an IC level talent at most. Even as a young fan I could see that Mero wasn’t a top guy. All of that said, the WWE could have probably used him better, but the same could be said for about 90% of all the talent that the WWE has ever employed.
