One of my favorite memories as a kid concerning the thing is that we didn't own a second controller (For some reason). But you could plug in and use an atari joystick of all things, which worked decently enough for sonic.

Original release model 1. There is a few EA games that won't play on the revised model 1. Plus the model 2 and 3 don't have nearly as good of sound as the model 1.

Model 3 consoles got really cheap in the late 90s. I actually got one for $25 brand new.

Everyone here saying they had JVC X'Eyes or side-attaching Sega CDs...did ANYONE have the original Sega CD? XD Had 2 model 1 CDs. Got my first one the day they came out. Took about 3 weeks pay and well yea it was a Sega CD. They are decent but not at what 250 when they came out? The second one was given to me in 2005 or so. Buddy had bought a box of genesis,32x and sega cd units. Got it cheap at some flea market he went to. Brought the box over and told me to test them all out and I could keep a Genesis,Sega CD and 32x. There was 10 or so model 1 and model 2 Genesis in the box. About 7 Sega CDS,2 model 1s and the rest the later model. And 5 32x. All the Genesis worked. All the CDs worked. None of the 32x worked. Gave the Sega and the CD to my youngest son when I moved. I think the CD died last year. I knew one kid with an X'eye, but was the same kid that owned a Neo Geo and a Turboexpress. Currently if I play Genesis games it is either on my Dreamcast or on that Portable Genesis thing Atgames put out. I know the sound is off on both, but I rarely play Genesis with the sound on anyways.

Model 2 was the one I got for Christmas of 94. Not 100% sure if I ever saw the other two in person.

Until the early 2000s I had only see the various versions of Model 1 and the X eye in person. First time I saw a model 3 I thought it was a bootleg like a buddy's dendy.

There's a French-Canadian guy who created a hardware mod (though you'd have to buy it, of course), that is supposed to "fix" the Model 2 so that it will have sound on par with the Model 1, and fix the timing error that causes Hellfire to play the music at half-speed on a Model 2. I've never picked one up myself, though.

I had the Model 1 first, and then a Model 3 after the first crapped out.

We discovered the above thing but backwards. Was 93 or 94 and a buddy had found his old 2600 and 10 or so games in his grandmother's attic. We hooked it up. But he only had one joystick that worked work a crap. Someone noticed the Genesis pad plug had the same layout and we plugged one in. From that day on I have used Genesis controllers on the 2600,except when playing a paddle game. Didn't the Commodore 64 have the same pin layout?

I had never noticed Hellfire played the music wrong on the later models, but that is cause even back when the Genesis first came out I rarely played it with the sound on. Usually it was 2 or 3 of us playing some game and we had on a record, cassette or CD. Just saw that Sega CD prices have went way up. Might have to sell off a few of the ones I got left. I liked the Sega CD. But it wasn't the price the day it came out. But hey it was better than the 32x.

Unlike the CD 32X might just have a few good games There is a few good 32x games, but nothing comes close to Lunar,Lunar 2 and Snatcher on the CD. Plus there is at least 5 or 6 other must own games. Sure the CD got flooded with FMV crap at first, but there was some good titles. Too bad stuff like Radical Rex got stupid high in price.

I have no idea if my CD even works anymore since I no longer have the plugs
I know the Genesis works like a charm
