Cena is leaps and bounds better than Roman but the main reason is that Cena actually owned being the top guy and face of the company. I say that even as a huge Cena hater. Roman doesn't ever seem sure of himself. Like he knows that he shouldn't actually be in that spot.

I wonder how many people stopped watching cos of Cena and how many have stopped watching cos of Reigns.
I'm not sure it's a even comparison since they still haven't fully committed to Reigns being the man for an extended period of time.

IIRC, there was an uptick in viewership and attendance in the first few years of Cena's big push while those things have either stayed flat on declined year to year with Reigns.

Cena at least won his matches and got to have that big run, so his fans were undoubtedly happy. Here, we've got Roman in this f***ing nightmarish half-measure situation where his detractors aren't happy because they won't stop making everything about him, but his fans aren't too happy either because he gets jerked around and made to look like a chump. I think that alone decides it for me, before trying to compare relative levels of talent or booking quality; when I was most fed up and done with Cena, someone else was enjoying it. You can't please everyone, but somebody was pleased by it, even if I wasn't, and I can accept that approach a whole lot more than I can accept one where seemingly nobody is happy and the idea seems designed to in fact make the smallest possible number of people happy with an outcome.
At least when Cena did the "they bought a ticket, they can respond however they want to" it felt kind of genuine, because as we all know in 2005 John Cena signed up for a surgery that turned him into a cyborg in an eternal life service to WWE. I've never believed that's WWE's desired outcome, but Cena could say it sincerely enough that I could believe he's not taking the boos to heart and can take a blow on the chin. Roman has never sounded convincing when he says it and he lacks that same ability to spit out the PR line with the same conviction.

Cena wins this based on 2 things. 1) He was never loathed by as many people and 2) his matches were for the most part far and away better than Reigns Also, Cena was legit chosen by the fans to be at worst the number 2 guy (once Batista's push started it was between those 2). People seem to forget that Cena was red hot, and fans wanted him to be the guy. It's when the superpush went overboard, that fans started to get mad. A major similarity between the two is that crowds turned on them after beating certain people. With Roman it was Daniel Bryan, with Cena it was Kurt Angle and possibly Christian (of all people). EVEN SO, Roman's solo run failed from the get-go. Cena was a hit until late 2005 or early 2006.

Cena was never out of shape. Guy was always a Machine. Cena is one of the strongest wrestlers ever, while Roman comes presented as a big power guy without the power.

Cena could pick up the 500 pound Big Show. Roman couldn't lift the undead body of Undertaker. Reigns, with the arguable exception of his spear (which makes Edges spear look like the one Rhyno gave The Rock in 2001), has no power moves.

Remember when he was in the final two in the rumble? He was the breakout star of the shield before the shield broke up. Fans just turned on him as soon as they noticed the WWE push machine.

He was over as the final two because he wasn't Batista. Dean was way more over after the split up of the shield than Roman was. Not to say that Roman wasn't over but he was not the most over star of the Shield.

Nah, that's the WWE narrative. He was getting so heavily cheered in that Rumble because he wasn't Batista. Fans were pissed that WWE was giving a spot tailor made for Daniel Bryan to a returning star of yesteryear, so they revolted and cheered the other guy. Jinder Mahal in that same position as Reigns would have been cheered just as much.

Only thing Roman has over Cena in my opinion is it doesn't feel like Roman has derailed other superstar's momentum as much as Cena has over the years. Guys like Umaga, Bray Wyatt and The Nexus were never the same after losing to Cena. I actually still shudder at how The Shield would have ended up like if they had lost at Elimination Chamber 2013 like was originally planned.
