Already? It feels like the PS4 is just finally showing off what it's truly capable of especially since the first chunk of its life cycle had a "here's some games from 1 or 2 years ago but prettier!" mentality. Doesn't really make a difference to me because I'm in no hurry to upgrade but I worry that developers are going to do that all over again with Last of Us 2, Red Dead 2, etc. This console gen has acutally been pretty long... but the problem was the original PS4 releases were almost entirely HD remakes of Ps3 games.

Just make another machine with PS2 backward compatibility.
Any CECHA PS3s still floating around out there are going to have taken a beating by now.

At this point I assume they are going to have all the game on download from the original PS1 at least I hope so because they have this PSNOW shit so it's not like they can't do it
If they can have that up for the PS5 with all the old catalogues available for download than that would be big and make it be able to play your old PS4 games on there

Glad I didn't get a Switch for my daughter (ok... and me) for Christmas. The Switch isn't going away any time soon The closest we’re going to get is a “New 3DS” style Switch which might not be until Christmas 2019 at earliest.

Yea, it took like 2 years for PS4 to really have a good amount of games coming out and this past year was def one of their best. Seems like as soon as they hit a really good stride, now the new system is out
But yea by the time PS5 is getting released the PS4 is going to be like 8-9 years old but it doesn't feel that old nor is it weathered

WII U was a bust but the Switch surpassed that day 1

No way they'd have all 406 of the NA PS2 games that I have (nor would I want to re-buy them all digitally if somehow they DID pull that off), and my PS2 is on its last legs...

The only disc they are going to care for is PS4 disc as they know backwards compatibility wasn't a thing for the PS4 and made people buy remasters but I don't expect the same for PS5 and they will use that as a selling point
We are getting closer to everything being digital but that's most likely still another generation away but they would wise to have their catalog up on the store as it could be big

I wouldn't be surprised if this next gen does drop disks altogether.... since most games have massive patches on install and such.

True, though even Sony's going to be gunshy about being the first one to do that. The potential rewards are big, but it's going to piss off retailers, plus there are the people who are very resistant to give up physical media.

Places like Gamestop are already going out of business do to people downloading their stuff and ignoring them as it is, and they can still sell "Download codes" in store/online. amazon seems to sell more codes than physical copies when I check for instance.

Yea, I mean it is inevitable no doubt and the ones who will really feel it is the ones who don't have great internet connection. I only buy physical from Gamestop when they do those 2 for 3 type sales because otherwise I can't be assed to go outside and wait online in some cases for a physical copy of a game
I wouldn't be surprised if they did indeed go straight digital for this upcoming generation which is a risk but also a big reward if they like I said earlier start by having a good amount of games from the previous generations already available as downloads and you are able to use your old codes as well from your PS4

Yeah, if they do something like your Playstation 4 purchases transfer over due to the same account or something.

Yeah, if they do something like your Playstation 4 purchases transfer over due to the same account or something. Yea, that would be the best option but you obviously can't rule out the greed factor and they be like nah everything is starting from zero like they did the PS4 and you have to buy everything new
One would hope they learned from that mistake

Yeah, but I have a sinking feeling they'll follow Nintendo who basically keep doing that. though Wii ---> you could still play the downloaded wii stuff... but going to the switch you have none of your downloads any more.

Both good points... but like I said most games aren't playable out of the box any more and require massive patches to play. Which is a big reason why it's taken me so long to finally join this generation, and also why I'm spending less time on gaming nowadays. It takes anywhere between 3-6 hours from the moment I put the disc in the tray until I can actually play the average game. Plus my game collection far exceeds the storage space available to me, meaning that if I want to go back and replay a game I've already completed, I'll have to redownload it. Gaming is supposed to be a fun, spontaneous experience, not something you have to plan a day in advance.

That's a fair point, I looked it up and didn't realize the PS4 released in 2013. That blows my mind somehow. As for the physical/digital debate, it wouldn't surprise me if they try to phase out physical discs all together since they don't seem to matter anymore. Between the day one patches that match the install size and all that they're basically one in the same now. You definitely need decent internet and a portable hard drive for console gaming these days which is a shame in some ways. And that's not even mentioning PS Now and the Xbox Games Pass moving everything toward a Steam style system on consoles.

Did I make a joke about the Odyssey in this thread? When do we get a new version of the Odyssey? Yep I did.

Gaming is supposed to be a fun, spontaneous experience, not something you have to plan a day in advance. Yea, I got a 2 TB about 1 year and a half after the PS4 came out and have never really come close to using it up even with Red Dead on my PS4 being over 100GBs
I got my PS4 connected to the wire so it makes it much faster thankfully and the best thing they could have done was the pre order feature they did so you can play the game directly at 12 instead of waiting 3-6 hours like we used to have to
Another good benefit of downloads as you can usually always find games on sale and I typically will buy them on the cheap and just stash them until I feel like downloading and playing them (Uncharted series, Mass Effect, etc...)
