Work or shoot, it led to the IWGP champ bragging about money and selling Funko Pops.
Kensuke Sasaki must be weeping.

What did Tama do to nearly get fired? Basically, committing massive Japanese social faux pas, and bragging about it on Twitter for heel heat.

I don't think it'd happen with him being the leader of LIJ, but if Naito left tomorrow I wouldn't be surprised.

That's really, really not kosher in Japan, and unlikely to be something NJPW told him to do, themselves. I could swear he did something else right in that time frame that also probably contributed to it, but it and really underwhelming for the second G1 in a row probably mean he's not going to be a singles guy anytime soon, and stuck in G.O.D.

Didn't he strike a fan as well? I think so, along with having a weird, drawn out flame war with some old guy on twitter, though I doubt the latter one really affected things much one way or another. It just helps further illustrate that Tama doesn't seem to have much in the way of self control, and that will probably hold him back from getting any higher in the company than he is now. I think they wanted a Karl Anderson type, but he just isn't equipped to do that.

When you get down to it, I bet you'll just see is guys wanting to be paid more because they think their presence bumped the houses in the US shows.

Getting back to Elgin for a minute. Of what value is he to NJPW at this point? He's basically a gaijin that is persona non grata in the United States, someone with such anti heat that they pulled him from the Cow Palace show and put the NEVER title back on Goto.
Good grief, Meltzer is still on and on about this stuff. Dude, it is a work. If you think you know from these guys first hand, they are working you, Big Dave.

As far as being a work, I'd say it's more a Chris Jericho kind of work, where someone's talking bullshit just for the sake of talking bullshit, rather than a company-written storyline actually trying to build to a Televised payoff.
The Elite are likely using it as a negotiating tactic for either more pay or (even) less dates.
And Tama just can't resist getting into a Twitter feud with anybody he comes across.

Also, Naito actually loves New Japan as much as Tanahashi, he just plays it differently. While he likes to do shows overseas and loves how the fans react to him, it's pretty obvious he loves working in Japan and would not want to make a full time move.

I was thinking of Chris Jericho when all this stuff came out, as he is always "working". Not saying, it's him, it just follows his style. But even if it's not a company storyline, everyone is playing into this and it fits perfectly into the outsider "gaijin" vs traditional talent storyline. This morning I noticed Cody telling SB Nation in an interview on YouTube(from last week) that "the Elite" could likely go to WWE and then there is the BTE storyline with him suggesting it. But BTE fodder is usually not part of New Japan and I think it's a bit much for them to bring Meltzer into the fold. Even though they obviously have a closeness to Meltzer, especially the Bucks and Cody. So the real question is was it the Elite or are they just playing into all of this because it fits perfectly? As said before, it could be Elgin as he is not working New Japan as much and if he gets cut there, he is pretty much finished as he has no value in English speaking countries. Although I could see him going to All Japan or other larger Japanese independents.

So am I the only one who thinks that this is all being reported because contracts are coming up and Meltzer's sources (re: the Elite) are putting this all out there as leverage to get better deals? I mean, I'm not saying that there is no disgruntlement whatsoever, but this is wrestling- the boys have been pissed off with the office all over the world forever.

This is exactly what I believe this is. The Bucks cooked this up with their boy Meltzer and Meltzer did them the favor and pushed it as some legit news so they can leverage for more money in their coming negotiations.

I dunno if Meltzer is actually involved. At least he better not be. If he was knowingly involved with a big work then his entire journalistic cred is kaput. If these guys are talking to him and semi working him then that's another thing because he basically has to take it at face value.
I have said these guys would be the biggest sellouts in the history of the business if they went to WWE right now. Yes, Adam Cole was in the group and he bolted for WWE, but circumstances were a bit different last year. It's not like Cole was involved in an entire indie PPV, nor did his departure cripple ROH as a whole. It would kinda hurt NJPW to lose these guys, especially Omega, but they have a bunch of guys and will be okay. It might cause them to rethink the U.S. expansion. But ROH is basically all in on these guys and it would wreck the company for these guys to walk.

Yeah, out of literally everybody in NJPW, I think Naito jumping ship would be the most shocking. Okada clearly digs working stateside (though he's not going anywhere any time soon), Tanahashi is a legend but could reasonably pull the "check something off my bucket list" move, but Naito is very much a creature of NJPW's system, in a tip-top position, and is pretty much living his dream. I'm not even particularly buying the idea that this is the Elite using Meltzer to get better deals come January; the way it's being handled on Twitter, the overtness of it, the quick response to it, etc., all makes it feel more like it's a work to continue setting up the current meta-storyline.
