I feel like I'm seeing online just as many people that are of Indian or South Asian descent who don't think there's a problem with Apu necessarily, and don't want him to change, as those who think there is. So who do you listen to? General rule of thumb is to listen to the ones that are being negatively affected, they're the ones with something actually at stake in it. Not everyone of a particular culture, race, ethnicity, etc is going to be on board 100% for anything.

Why cant they just give him a dignified sendoff? They did it for Mona Simpson, and she wasnt even taken off to avoid controversy.

Looks like a bunch of non-Indians telling an Indian how grateful he should've been about "representation" (in the form of what is effectively brownface). I will say I'm thoroughly entertained by the ones claiming he "clearly never watched the show", which they would know he did if they bothered to watch his documentary.

Okay, I absolutely freaking hate arguments like this.
That's not how... anything works. At all. If people were immune to all criticism because, "Whatever, it's THEIR creation," then humanity never would've had any reason to ever improve anything.

And people talking down to Hari and South Asians in general telling them how to feel.

And people talking down to Hari and South Asians in general telling them how to feel. Because clearly people's outrage at a problematic cartoon character they like possibly being written out of a show is much more important than Indian people not wanting to be mocked and bullied.

In other words, "How DARE these offended people speak out about something I like! They're pussies for not accepting the joke!" It does suck that there's still plenty of people like this online, and at least two users in this discussion, who believe that anyone who discusses how something impacted their lives is nothing but a crybaby.

lol
*complains about "fake outrage"* *gets angry and "mourns" a character being removed from a show they likely no longer watch*

And people talking down to Hari and South Asians in general telling them how to feel. Because clearly people's outrage at a problematic cartoon character they like possibly being written out of a show is much more important than Indian people not wanting to be mocked and bullied. I'm definitely on the other side of this conversely to the majority specifically on here but I'd concede that "Indian people not wanting to be mocked and bullied" takes precedent over "people's outrage at a 'problematic' character they like possibly being written out of a show". That being said ---- the type that would mock will find something else to mock those people if they're that kind of person in the first place. It won't stop. They'll find something else. Because there will always be bullying. And mockery. It's like the anecdote of Ricardo saying HHH would mock him by calling him "bumblebee man". If it wasn't Bumblebee Man, it'd be something else. So I guess the solution in all this is a well rounded character being completely eradicated because..he was voiced by a white guy? And I guess the silver lining would be "better representation" of Indians in pop culture. I can't really think of a lot but I'm admittedly pretty ignorant with most hip pop-culture these days.

Most replies in this thread suggest all Indians and South Asians feel that way, when it’s only one guy that spoke out
