So if we were to melt the ice and the water would cover Mars...would life eventually form? Could be interesting. You're assuming Water + Dirt + Rocks = life. Last I checked, Water + Dirt + Rocks = rock soup. But I suppose that's a discussion not for this board. Sounds delicious.

This is the way my mind works. I see the phrase ' mad ice on mars' and my first thought is of a cube sitting on mars going, ' Damn earthlings and their land rovers, taking satellite pictures up here all the time, it's just my frozen ass up here, nothing to see, get off my lawn!'

Really interesting stuff. Although for now, it probably wont mean much to us humans. Theres still a long ways to go before we go to Mars.

Wait, I must be reading this wrong. I thought we've know about ice caps on Mars' North & South poles for a long time now. Is this news just the fact that we've now explored those ice caps and proven that it was, in fact, actual ice that we were seeing?

The Saturn 5 Rocket, which took us there before has been dismantled and NASA doesn't have the plans to build another, since they were destroyed in a clean-up of NASA documents.

There's frozen methane, 'dry ice', etc. They've now shown that there is water ice, what we normally refer to as ice here.

Years ago, I watched a show about colonizing Mars, with humans. One of the things they wanted to do was set off a load of bombs (nukes, I believe) to create the greenhouse effect and force Mars to get an atmopshere. That's a problem, as well. Mars atmosphere is too thin, so the planet runs too hot and cold for us. If they set off that many nuclear weapons to create an atmosphere for humans, wouldn't the ungodly amount of radiation on the planet kill off said humans? Was that explained on the show? As for the buggalo, I just hope we don't run into that Marlboro like ranch hand from the Wong Ranch...."You're pathetic!"

Mars atmosphere is too thin, so the planet runs too hot and cold for us. It's not that the atmosphere couldn't be made thicker, but that still doesn't solve the problem. Mars does not have much of a magnetosphere, so it is bleeding off it's atmosphere due to solar radiation. If we were to make the atmosphere thicker (which wouldn't be that hard), we would have to find a way to either mimic a magnetosphere or boost the current planetary dynamo of Mars in order to keep it. Also, trying to create greenhouse effect is a dicey proposition. Do it a little too much and you recreate Venus. Do it even more than that and you recreate Titan (Saturn's moon), which has an anti-greenhouse effect in place.
