I think there's something to be said for the argument that they're also being paid in exposure and experience, but I don't agree that people should accept unfair conditions (in any line of work) just because that's the way it's always been. Except the industry doesn't feel it's unfair conditions, because it's the accepted way things are done by those within it. Just like one of the earlier replies compared it to unpaid internships in other professions. Greenhorns pay their dues first. If anyone (including the independent wrestlers who brought up this subject with their recent complaints on social media) doesn't want to wrestle for what a promotion is offering them, they can simply say "no." They can instead try work elsewhere, and try to set their own price. In reality, though, just because they think they should be paid a certain amount doesn't mean they're worth that much at the gate, or are going to get that much from promotions. If they don't want the offered $45, they can stay home, complain about it on Twitter, and then wonder why they're not getting bookings (because promotions are now hesitant to offer them anything, due to having a poor attitude). But "That's the way it's always been" is a terrible argument and not true. Guys coming up in the 80s and earlier would be legit injured, on purpose to see if they were "tough enough" and to protect the business and that included reputable guys, not just dirtbags taking people's money for nothing. Does that mean everyone at the PC should line up to have their legs broken? This is a grey area because of the exposure/getting ring time argument, but the way it's always been has to change otherwise we'd still have a lot of really crappy practices.

I'm a social worker, which is a profession where you need to do about a year and a half of an unpaid internship to actually get a decent job, so I do get that mentality of doing a job for free to get that live training. I think a greater level of openness about the process would help everyone though

I guess in the end it’s up to the performer to work out their pay ahead of time. If you don’t like the pay don’t work.
If the promoter backs out on the deal he’s a scumbag, should get word out
