So I had a talk today with someone and something came up about the Fast & Furious franchise. The guy said that he stopped at the fifth one and said that there were "too many" movies in that series. I even brought up about how Star Wars franchise has just as many, if not more. However, he said yes, but "Star Wars is good," to which I replied with "That's not a valid argument." This is not the first time I had heard such an argument, by the way.
But the topic of how "quality justifying a big franchise" is a topic for another day. What I want to know is when there is enough films in a franchise. With Fast & Furious having two (or three, if you count the Shaw & Hobbs film that is coming) more films to tie up the entire series, the light at the end of the tunnel is closer than one would think. Of course, you have people online complaining how "it should have ended after the first film" or "they keep making these movies?" yada yada yada. It makes me wonder why some people don't complain about there being numerous James Bond movies, though that could be different because a lot of those stories are based on books and he is quite a cultural phenomenon that has existed more than five decades.
So when does it seem like there more than enough films in a series? I mean Transformers has five films and spinoff coming out soon that seems even better than the main series, but I am sure that a sixth film will be made and people will still go see it, even though most of those movies were not that good.

It's doubtful that anyone can honestly say Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales was an amazing rocketbuster of a ride, the blockbuster they've been waiting their whole life for. But that sumbitch made almost $800 million globally and that's all it takes to keep a franchise rolling.

I thought it first got ridiculous with the Saw movies. They had to crank one out every year for Halloween because the first one was a surprise hit. I say anything past six is overdoing it a bit.
Of course, there are exceptions. I really enjoy the Mission: Impossible films, and the last one, which was the sixth, I believe...was really good. Quality does count.
I'm also interested to see how or where they go with Jurassic Park/World. It will be the sixth film next movie, and things got crazy with dinosaurs out in society now. Plus, I will never get tired of dinosaurs eating people.
And as for James Bond, I think that works because they're mostly stand alone movies. You don't have to see Goldfinger to watch Goldeneye or see Live and Let Die to understand Skyfall. They might refer back to stuff, but you don't have to watch them in order to enjoy.

Basically, there is no set number. Is it enjoyable... does it make money... and does it feel like anyone cares is more or less the three questions... For instance I think 2 movies in Snyders DC universe was too many  |

For me, when the story is over.
Once a series reaches a good, satisfactory conclusion but they decide to keep going is when it's too much.
Star Wars wrapped up perfectly at the end of Jedi. The new films should be set in a different time period-- The Mandalore Wars would have been great.
Toy Story 3 wrapped up the series fine. Four will probably be good, but it isn't needed.

As long as there's an audience, any franchise should try to satisfy that audience.

I think trilogies are popular for a reason. You can tell a great story and get out of there leaving people satisfied. A lot of movies start going off the rails by the third sequel if they’re not really following a set story over time. Many times having multiple sequels afterwards feels like you’re beating a dead horse. Just my opinion.

That's over at Warner Bros. though, they have a history of working with troubled actors. Disney are a whole different kettle of fish, and with an ongoing lawsuit against Depp for assaulting a crew member I suspect Disney have put him on the blacklist for now. |

I think the answer really is simple. When the sequels are good and there is more story to be told, you could make a million sequels. When you are just churning them out to make a buck and there is really nothing going on, or it is the exact same movie happening in a different location, it sucks.
