youtu.be/VnhdPCdFsgE"I can tell this ain't gonna work! I don't wanna walk! This is degrading!" IMO, David was the best talker out of the Von Erich brothers. He wasn't Flair, but I'd put him ahead of Kerry and Kevin.

David was definitely the best talker of the brothers, but he still sucked hard at it. Every once in a while, he could pull one out that worked, but most often, he was just as "uh," "ah" and "er" as the rest.

After having watched all of WCCW from the beginning of 1982 until currently being in December 1984, David was definitely the best talker. With Kerry and Kevin in those days, it felt like Jumping Jeff Farmer-tier in there. Interesting though that he was the last of the Von Erichs to go into a feud with Flair (with Kerry and Kevin getting NWA title shots before him).

With the Von Erichs I feel Fritz was alright at playing a gruff dad, David was generally poor but could sound like a normal guy occasionally, and the other brothers were abysmal on interviews.

I don't know how to explain it but I was able to look past a little because of the story being told on the show. This was a great angle.

JCP later copied this angle with Dusty making Baby Doll work on his farm.

JCP later copied this angle with Dusty making Baby Doll work on his farm. And Watts copied it with Missy Hyatt and Dark Journey, and WCW copied it when Bischoff had to be an office go-fer for Flair as an angle.

Did David do any promos as a heel during his brief run in Florida? Very curious to see how convincing a Von Erich was as a heel.

That was probably since, of the brothers, David was the one who was to be groomed to be the champion at some point. Kerry had the best looks, Kevin was the most athletic, but David was the most well-rounded and best of them to work with, apparently. Give it a few years had he not died, and odds are pretty strong he'd have become NWA Champion.

Give it a few years had he not died, and odds are pretty strong he'd have become NWA Champion. Nah, David was never going to be champ. As strong as his dad pushed for it, it was never going to happen. None of the other NWA members who had voting power wanted him in the role, and his trip to Florida to show the board that he could work heel (which was an absolute thing to be able to do for the board) was mostly considered underwhelming at best, a disaster at worst. Had David not passed, no Von Erich would have touched that belt, even Kerry.

Given David was only 25 when he died, if Fritz hadn't f***ed up his opportunities to take advantage of the platform he had, he might have been a pretty difficult person to say no to, particularly if people like Flair had pushed for David. Then again, who knows how much of that might've been him being sainted after death, anyway.

That’s why it failed when he tried to become a badass freebird in wcw. Yep.... never bought him as a Freebird. I do. Hayes and Gordy both endorsed it, with Gordy being part of that incarnation early on, and those two really have the only say at the end of the day. As far as the chickenshit vs badass thing...while Jimmy was never a convincing tough guy, I had no problem with him not reverting back to his old persona; his babyface run had instilled him with a confidence he lacked earlier, and for once, it didn't magically disappear with a heel turn.

They were also heel-ish in GA for a hot second, weren't they? I'm not aware of David ever working GA, but I could be wrong (he did a couple of tag tourney shots for Crockett is about as close as I'm aware of). The Von Erichs were definitely the heels when they went to the Amarillo territory to work with the Funks.

Although, apparently David DID work GA at the very beginning of his career, but it was literally four matches, three of them against Randy Savage, of all people.
