Yep.... never bought him as a Freebird. I do. Hayes and Gordy both endorsed it, with Gordy being part of that incarnation early on, and those two really have the only say at the end of the day. As far as the chickenshit vs badass thing...while Jimmy was never a convincing tough guy, I had no problem with him not reverting back to his old persona; his babyface run had instilled him with a confidence he lacked earlier, and for once, it didn't magically disappear with a heel turn. No no no no no, there’s something wrong in the universe about f***ing Jimmy Garvin not backing down to Dr Death Steve Williams and thinking he was on the same level as the Road Warriors. WCW Freebirds were a trainwreck.

David was definitely the best talker of the brothers, but he still sucked hard at it. Every once in a while, he could pull one out that worked, but most often, he was just as "uh," "ah" and "er" as the rest. Get the feeling if all the Von Erich brothers were one guy, they'd be one awesome wrestler? David's best promos. Kevin's skill (he's considered the best of the lot, isn't he?). Kerry's look. Chris' passion (he's the one who really wanted to be involved). Sorry for leaving Mike out, I'm not familiar enough with all of WCCW.

It's sort of the same deal with the Freebirds really. Hayes was the best talker, Gordy the best worker, Roberts was the experienced veteran. None of them were really the guy you'd build everything around, though Watts tried in the UWF with Gordy as champion.
The lack of mic skills and charisma is why I'm baffled by Vince desperately wanting Kerry if Hogan hadn't come in. Backlund in the early 80s wasn't exactly Mr. Excitement on the mic but even he was a better promo than Kerry (or Kevin).

This is literally the first time I've ever heard someone try to posit that Kerry Von Erich lacked charisma. That's an insane thing to say.

This is literally the first time I've ever heard someone try to posit that Kerry Von Erich lacked charisma. That's an insane thing to say. He had massive physical charisma, yes. But he couldn't talk worth a damn. Like, he was abysmal on the mic. Just god-awful. Bret Hart even tells a story in his book of watching him trying to pre-tape a promo, and after an alarmingly high number of tries, they just basically said "Fine, that's as good as we're gonna get, we're done here".

Talking /= charisma. Charisma is what you display without having to talk. Kerry was charismatic as hell.

This is literally the first time I've ever heard someone try to posit that Kerry Von Erich lacked charisma. That's an insane thing to say. No, he was very charismatic, in his body language. He looked like a greek god and fought like a beast, and he shot women looks that made them squeal. It's just that vocally- he, unfortunately, came off dopey a lot of the time. Like that heel promo- "Yeah, I got mah GOLD on, my brother's comin' here, lookatthisbaby! We gonna go all the way and get- *trails off*" It's like how Jeff Hardy and Rey Mysterio are so-so on promos (I'd say they're both ahead of the Von Erichs), but have a great physical presence and they look like superstars.

Talking /= charisma. Charisma is what you display without having to talk. Kerry was charismatic as hell. One's ability to speak is absolutely part of the "charisma" package. Charisma is not just physical. It's how you look, how you move, how you act, what you say and how you say it. All of it.

Maybe it's not just physical, but it sure isn't just verbal either. Plenty of guys had charisma who couldn't talk, or speak English. Antonio Inoki's charisma transcends language.
Bottom line, Kerry Von Erich was not lacking in charisma in any way. His pluses in other areas more than outweighed his lack of speaking skills.

Say what you will, but I want to go to Pizza Inn now. Also $3.29 buffet!? Sold! Their pizza is pretty good. Had it for our honeymoon dinner in 1998. (We didn't want to search for a fancy place to eat dinner around where we stayed. Just went to Pizza Inn, grabbed a large and went back to our hotel room.)

I dont know. They were dumb jock kids I used to know when I was a kid in the 80's. They just sounded like a high school football player being interviewed about an upcoming game on Friday. It worked gangbusters for a while.

I hate to say it, but I always found the Von Erichs very overrated. They were red hot where they were, when they were, but I never saw enough in any of them to say "Oh my God, I see it!"
