So i assume wwe had big plans for undertaker upon his signing and character creation. But was the debut as a million dollar man team member always the plan with no real build?
Apparently bad news brown was originally scheduled to be part of the team so the mystery teammate part was added later. Was taker just added because he was available? I'm surprised they didn't do vignettes or some other technique to build up his arrival and just inserted him randomly with dibiase and rhythm and blues in a totally bland team. Thoughts?

From a character/story line perceptive it made a lot of sense for Dibiase to use his vast resources to recruit a monster from outside the roster and keep it a secret up until bell time to give his team the edge.
Hell his entire feud with Dusty Rhodes was filled with Ted doing surprising things like that to get one over on Dusty at every turn. (IE: Buying Sapphire, Bringing in Taker, beating up Dustin etc.)

yeah there was plans for Bad News to be a member of DiBiase's team, assume the photos are done months in advance for the magazine etc as he left after Summerslam. I remember reading some old dirt sheets from the time and the rumour was Undertaker was going to hatch from the egg (I feel like they even said his character would be the called the Egg Man - can't see that having the same longevity as the Dead Man)

Bad News probably would’ve abandoned his team for the third year in a row.

If I didn't know better I'd think that Greg Valentine was naked behind that guitar.

It's one of my favorite debuts. No vignettes, just this big scary dude wearing all black coming down the entrance. I love the way commentary put him over, from what I can vaguely remember from the last time I watched it.

Bad News probably would’ve abandoned his team for the third year in a row. It could've been entertaining if he tries to walk out on multiple occasions but each time Dibiase stops him and bribes him with more and more money to stick around.

I remember my friend's grandmother watched and he couldn't make it, but over the phone she said the mystery man was some big red headed guy and I guessed Mean Mark. I think it was a good intro as everyone was dying to find out who the mystery man was. I need to go back and watch this again.

I think having it as a surprise worked REALLY well.
From me being mesmerized watching to the reactions of the people in the live crowd, it definitely worked.

Bad News probably would’ve abandoned his team for the third year in a row. All Honky's fault. That would have been the third year in a row Bad News was on a team with him.

I think it worked really well. Taker had that recognizable Addams Family vibe that we could all instantly understand, yet was so mysterious and intriguing that we all couldn't wait to see more of him. It wasn't like a Goldust gimmick, which required weeks of promos just to minimize the "wtf is this?" response the first time he stepped in the ring.
