51. Hellraiser. Sick classic. The makeup and effects are so damn awesome. The first half is a little slow but the second half and the final act especially are the real damn good stuff.

#94 Mission: Impossible 25/24/00 | Director: John Woo | Rotten Tomatoes: 57% | Runtime: 123 minutes | Platform: DVDPremise: Ethan Hunt and his new criminal girlfriend work together to stop the release of a biological weapon. Strengths: Tom Cruise (Ethan Hunt) has great hair in this movie. No, seriously, he does. Anyway, he’s once again fun in the role. You can tell he’s having the time of life getting to do some of the wild stunts that Ethan must go through. John Woo is a solid action director, so he understands how to make those scenes work. They’re mostly shot well and come across looking really impressive. When Ethan is in an action scene, it’s good dumb fun. I also liked how they brought back Ving Rhames (Luther Stickell) because he’s a lot of fun. Weaknesses: Pretty much everything else is rough. Thandie Newton (Nyah Nordoff-Hall) is brought in as the main love interest. She’s not terrible in it, but the character is awful. She jumps into bed with Ethan almost instantly and he’s risking his life for her within minutes. That relationship is bad and doesn’t feel earned at all, so I can’t buy into any of his motivations. The plot is very bland and uninteresting. There’s bad dialogue everywhere you turn. The main villain, played by Dougray Scott (Sean Ambrose) is also uninteresting. Overall: The action scenes work well enough and keep this from being dreadful. The rest of it is one giant mess. The worst installment of the franchise. [**]

#95 Reservoir Dogs #96 Mission: Impossible 35/6/06 | Director: J.J. Abrams | Rotten Tomatoes: 70% | Runtime: 125 minutes | Platform: DVDPremise: Ethan Hunt is forced back into his life as an agent when an arms dealer kills his mentee. Strengths: One thing this series has lacked so far is a compelling villain. That wasn’t the case here. Phillip Seymour Hoffman (Owen Davian) is phenomenal. He’s a guy who isn’t physically intimidating, yet commands the screen and feels threatening because he’s so confident in everything he does. It’s a wonderful performance that makes an averagely written character into something much more. As I said in the last installment, Tom Cruise (Ethan Hunt) has figured out the character. It’s even more of a case here. It’s the best he’s been and the most comfortable he’s seemed in the role. Ving Rhames (Luther Stickell) was fun again, but what really helped was adding likable characters to the team who served a purpose. Jonathan Rhys Meyers (Declan Gormley), Maggie Q (Zhen Lei), and Simon Pegg (Benju Dunn) embody that. Laurence Fishburne (Theodore Brassel) was another strong addition to the cast. I thought this plot was mostly laid out well and featured some great twists. At one point, I thought they telegraphed a twist too obviously, only to have it turn into a red herring, which I appreciated. As always, the action scenes were well done. Weaknesses: It’s nowhere near the level of part two, but this is another one with a thin female lead. Michelle Monaghan (Julia Meade) isn’t bad in the role, but the character is nothing. She’s simply just a love interest and damsel in distress. Though she gets one decent moment near the end, she’s ultimately just motivation for Ethan. The final scene that wraps things up feels kind of out of place and it’s a bit jarring. Overall: J.J. Abrams came in and helped save this franchise. This was a big turning point thanks to a chilling performance by Hoffman, fun side characters, great action, and some really interesting plot twists. [****]

#97 and #98 Vice12/25/18 | Director: Adam McKay | Rotten Tomatoes: 66% | Runtime: 132 minutes | Platform: Blu-RayPremise: The life of Dick Cheney is chronicled as he rises to the role of Vice President of the United States. Strengths: Christian Bale (Dick Cheney) gives one of the best performances of his career in this one. That’s saying something because he’s had a stellar career. He nails all the little ticks and mannerisms of Cheney in each scene. The acting across the board is strong. Amy Adams (Lynne Vincent Cheney) might be at her best alongside Bale in her career (American Hustle, The Fighter) and that was the case again here. Sam Rockwell (George W. Bush) is a show stealer in a limited role as the former President. Steve Carell (Donald Rumsfeld) is also great. Obviously, the makeup effects in this are fantastic. There’s a reason that department was Oscar nominated. The film is mostly well written, with interesting scenes and sharp dialogue among the characters. It gives a very interesting look in how one man rose through the ranks of the political world and how much influence Cheney had on a lot of things. Weaknesses: Adam McKay often beats us over the head with the message of the movie. There are times when he tries too hard to showcase something, as if he doesn’t trust his audience’s ability to understand it all. Often, there are parts of the story that feel kind of dull. That causes some pacing issues and the two hour runtime ends up feeling closer to 2.5 hours. Overall: I can see this being polarizing. While I’m not as invested in the political agenda, I found this to be an entertaining film that deserves a ton of praise for the work of its actors. [***½] Game Night2/23/18 | Directors: John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein | Rotten Tomatoes: 80% | Runtime: 100 minutes | Platform: TheaterThe Plot: A group of friends have their murder mystery game night turn into a real mystery when one member is kidnapped. Strengths: Game Night was the most fun I’ve had at the movie theater in a really long time. Right off the bat, the concept is an intriguing one, but one that was susceptible to clichés. Thankfully, the film avoided them. Often, when a film has this many characters and pairings, at least one will lack something. However, it didn’t matter who was on screen when everyone was separated. It was all entertaining. Things were at their best when everyone was together, though. The cast is brilliant. Jason Bateman (Max) is hit or miss for me, but he was very good here. Rachel McAdams (Annie) gave her funniest performance since Mean Girls, while the budding relationship between Ryan (Billy Magnussen) and Sarah (Sharon Horgan) was endearing, even though I was unfamiliar with both actors. Lamorne Morris (Kevin) and Kylie Bunbury (Michelle) had the best side story, as Kevin tried to figure out what celebrity his wife once slept with. The end result made for a really funny moment. The show stealer is Jesse Plemons (Gary). Everything he said or did was hilariously awkward. I loved how many fantastic twists and turns the story took. There were so many great, unexpected moments that kept you at the edge of your seat. The script was great, with some great dark comedy and dialogue. There’s also an awesome surprise cameo of the actor who plays the Bulgarian, but I won’t give that away here. Weaknesses: A few things seem very far-fetched. Granted, I know a lot of comedy is about over exaggerating, but it did go far in several places. A few of the laughs were also ruined for me by putting way too much into the trailers. I do wish we got a bit more from Kyle Chandler (Brooks), because he’s great and felt a bit underutilized. Overall: If you’re looking to have a damn good time, this is the movie for you. The game night with friends is relatable, the twists will keep you engaged, and everything is flat out hilarious. An absolute blast. [****]

19) 2019-04-07 "Atlas Shrugged Part 3: Who Is John Galt?" - 2014Based on the controversial novel by Ayn Rand, the last of the trilogy. f*** this movie. Review: {Spoiler}{Spoiler}{Spoiler}
OK, after the plane crash at the end of Part 2, Dagny survives and meets the real John Galt, who has started Atlantis, a 'utopia' community of the missing business execs, and he offers to let Dagny stay. Dagny instead decides to return to the real world and try to fight against the government over-regulation. Galt follows her and reveals himself and his plan to the US by interrupting a national broadcast by the Head Of State (not really the President). Galt is captured and tortured, Dagny and the other residents of Atlantis rescue him, and as they escape the US starts falling into chaos.
I've said that I have problems with the story before, and they continue.
- It appears that the Government is doing what they're doing not because of "idealistic iron-handed socialism" but good ol'fashioned "power corrupts".
- Atlantis looks a lot like small-town farming community America, except the houses are huge... who built those houses? The rich people, who I'm betting have never seen a hammer in their lives before? There's a copper mine in the area run by d'Anconia, and there are workers... are they former billionaires?
- the argument Galt is presenting is that the government is interfering with big business and that's hurting the country... I get that but there has to be limits and regulations, or else you'll have mega-farms using untreated water to grow lettuce and have salmonella outbreaks... or nausea medicine for pregnant women that causes terrible birth defects... or airplanes that have 'safety measures' that cause crashes...
So there's that. As for the movie, it's pretty damn bad. There are some pretty big continuity blunders between this and the previous two:
- the plane crashed in a field at the end of the second, and is in the middle of a forest at the beginning of the third, and the wreckage is surrounded by standing trees that would have been knocked down by the crash.
- the actress playing Dagny looks 10 years younger than in Part 2, and the actor playing d'Anconia looks 10 years older than in Part 2, and yet they were supposed to be kids together... and lovers...
- remember the character Reardon? His story was pretty much half of the first two movies? He's played by Rob Morrow, the guy from "Northern Exposure". His name is listed during the opening credits, and he is shown up close once. In a still photograph. His story is almost erased from the third movie. He may have been one of the 'rebels' who rescued Galt at the end but they never show them up close at all.
- the rescue of Galt was ridiculous. The building was guarded by one guy standing on the roof in front of a door, and that was the limits of their security. Fer cryin' out loud, they didn't even notice a helicopter landing on the roof!
- another major part of the book was Dagny's brother marrying a 'commoner' who learns that her husband was a POS and Dagny was the real power behind the business, and commits suicide because of her despair. Barely mentioned here, they show her apologizing to Dagny, then it's a newspaper article about her.
- Galt looks like Billy Ray Cyrus. Yes, Galt and Dagny have sex. The movie plays up the 'romance' between the two, so much that it feels like a romance novel brought to life.
Ridiculously bad. RiDONKulously bad. Avoid. Just want to add one thing: First movie: $ 35,000,000 budget, made about $ 9,000,000 Second movie: $10,000,000 budget, made just over $ 3,000,000 Third movie: $ 5,000,000 budget, made around $ 900,000 EDIT: AND ANOTHER DAMN THING! In the story, the US is already falling apart, gas is so expensive that cars are our of fashion, planes can't fly, and the only 'trustworthy' mode of long-distance travel is the train (on tracks that haven't been maintained for 100 years but I complained about that before)... but everyone's cellphone works just fine? With everything else crumbling, the infrastructure to maintain cell towers just keeps on keeping on?

53. Redneck Zombies. The violence comes slow but goddamn is this movie so over-the-Top funny that it doesn’t matter. When the violence does happen it’s so over-the-Top too. This is hilariously bad, on purpose! Bob is so funny.
54. Bodybags. Decent horror anthology (much like Tales from the Crypt) that never took off.

#99 2 Guns8/2/13 | Director: Baltasar Kormakur | Rotten Tomatoes: 64% | Runtime: 109 minutes | Platform: DVDPremise: Two crooked undercover officers lead investigations on the other under the disguise of a partnership. Strengths: It almost doesn’t matter what the story of this was, because people were going to watch it for two reasons. Denzel Washington (Robert Trench/Bobby Beans) and Mark Wahlberg (Michael Stigman). A good buddy cop film needs to have two talented leads with strong chemistry. That’s exactly what this was. Wahlberg and Washington played well off each other, making the most of what the script gave them. I also liked Paula Patton (Deb Rees) in this. She’s great alongside Washington and her character isn’t just some love interest. She’s fleshed out and flawed and her story finishes in a way that makes sense. The action scenes are solid and there’s a fair of amount of comedy throughout. Not on the level of the Rush Hour series or buddy action films like that, but enough to keep you smiling. Weaknesses: The movie follows plenty of tropes we’ve come to expect from this genre. It doesn’t really ever do anything that special or overly interesting to make it stand out. The plot can get a bit convoluted in the early stages. You’re left wondering who is double crossing who and who to trust. Not in a good way, either. All these different entities are involved and you have to really suspend your belief to make it all work. There’s also just not enough tension packed into this to make me truly care and I don’t believe the director handled everything that well. Overall: A good action comedy featuring two charming leads with great chemistry. It just lacks tension and some of the laughs it needs to excel at either side of the genre. [***]

55. They Live. Can you believe I’ve never seen this one? For me the best part of this movie is just watching two people I love. Roddy Piper is great. God I miss that man. But even better is Keith David, who will always be Admiral Anderson to me. His voice just fills me with warmth. “The line” happened a lot earlier in the movie than I expected. It’s a really good movie.
