73. The Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King (Extended Edition). The extended edition of this didn’t feel long at all. Probably because I took a two hour break between discs. These movies are hilariously macho but I’m not even going to make fun. I still teared up at the end. It’s beautiful. Why the hell did Liv Tyler get third billing in the credits, only after Elijah Wood and Ian McKellen? I guess that happens when your dad is an aging rockstar. And her later career output shows what happens when it turns out you're terrible at acting.

#116 Why Him?12/23/16 | Director: John Hamburg | Rotten Tomatoes: 39% | Runtime: 111 minutes | Platform: DVDPremise: An overprotective father meets his daughter’s new billionaire boyfriend over the holidays. Strengths: In other hands, this movie probably wouldn’t hit. But, it works because of the interplay between the two leads. Bryan Cranston (Ned Fleming) and James Franco (Laird Mayhew) make for one of the more entertaining oddball pairings in this kind of movie. Their interactions are filled with funny and awkward moments, but there’s also heart to it all. I also liked Zoey Deutch (Stephanie Fleming), who continues to be delightful in everything she’s done, and Megan Mullally (Barb Fleming). The holiday setting adds to the heartwarming moments of it all and make for an enjoyable film. Weaknesses: This is not something new. The father vs. daughter’s boyfriend trope has been done to death in film, especially for comedic purposes. If you’ve seen a few of those, this doesn’t really offer much new. You know where the plot is going to go and you can almost exactly tell how it will get there. Some of the jokes really do miss the mark and they often aim for the lowest common denominator. Those jokes fail, showing the movie should’ve focused on the relationships more than the cheap laughs. I usually enjoy Keegan-Michael Key (Gustav) but here it felt like the character was written poorly. They tried too hard to give us someone who was way out there and weird and since it didn’t work, the laughs lacked. Overall: Don’t come in looking for something special. The writing is pretty poor and unoriginal, but the cast is strong enough to lift it up into “pretty good” territory. [**½]

74. Inferno. I’ve never seen Suspiria but I’m not sure I really need to have seen it to make any sense of this. Well, this was available at my fingers with zero effort and Suspiria wasn’t. Plus this has Ania Pieroni, who I would watch read the dictionary. The violence in this movie was cool, the atmosphere was creepy and the overall feeling was dark but something was missing. Maybe because everything else I watch has all of that but amplified? Like in the Fulci movies I watch someone would get their head cut off by a piece of glass and there would be a close-up of blood and brain-matter flying around everywhere. Whereas in this you see some blood splatter on a wall then a shot of the body laying their with glass stuck in its neck. I prefer the latter myself. This did look really good though and had beautiful, vibrant colour.

#117 Zero Dark Thirty12/19/12 | Director: Kathryn Bigelow | Rotten Tomatoes: 91% | Runtime: 157 minutes | Platform: Blu-RayPremise: An obsessed CIA analyst leads the decade long hunt for Osama Bin Laden. Strengths: I think Katheryn Bigelow was a fantastic choice to helm this movie. She has experience with the genre and does a great job capturing the character moments throughout. Jessica Chastain (Maya) is outstanding as the lead. She nails all the bits of emotion this character goes through. Sadness, desperation, obsession, and grit. We get the sense of she is both vulnerable and tough. All the character stuff really delivers and makes for a gripping tale. The movie is beautifully shot, with some stellar cinematography. The final act is well crafted. The use of the technology and the tactical things they try make it come across in a really cool way. I appreciated how the movie didn’t try to be overly patriotic. It could’ve gone that route but avoided it and didn’t always paint America in the best of lights. Supporting performances from Kyle Chandler (Joseph Bradley), Jason Clarke (Dan), Joel Edgerton (Patrick) and Edgar Ramirez (Larry) were all strong. Weaknesses: This is a long movie. You feel a lot of the 157 minute runtime. There are pacing issues in this. While I enjoyed the character moments, it does drag. That makes it so the well shot final sequence doesn’t work as well. It made it less interesting and by the time it happened, I just wanted it to hurry up. That’s not the way you should feel about the climax. As usual with a lot of stories based on real events, it was missing that sense of drama and urgency. You know the outcome and only certain movies are able to keep things nail-biting when that’s the case. This one didn’t do that. Overall: There’s a lot to like about this movie. It’s technically very well done and there is some great acting. It just drags at points and is missing some of the drama I wanted. [***½]

Caddyshack - I watched it with the boys the other day. They loved the music. They laughed at all the jokes. They cheered when the gopher danced as the end credits rolled. I'd say the movie was a hit with them.

75. Opera. I’m a pretty open minded dude but one thing I really can’t stand is opera. It just does nothing for me. So watching a lot of this was torture for me. Then it had these complete moods shifts into realms I liked way more. And I’m not sure if the version I was watching (one I found on YouTube) was edited or not, because the violence was really tame. The people in it were so dumb. This was a strange one. I just wanted to watch this because it had Dario Argentos name on it. Some of the direction and cinematography was really beautiful though. I’m not sure if I liked this. It may have been too artsy.

#118 Walk The Line11/18/05 | Director: James Mangold | Rotten Tomatoes: 83% | Runtime: 136 minutes | Platform: DVDPremise: Singer Johnny Cash rises to fame and falls in love with fellow musician June Carter. Strengths: This movie was up for a lot of awards and it’s clear why. Reese Witherspoon (June Carter) steals the show and gives the best film performance of her career. She nails every single scene she’s in. It’s definitely the best part of the movie. Joaquin Phoenix (Johnny Cash) more than holds his own, also giving a great performance. You can tell he studied enough of Cash, yet managed to put his own spin on it. Their relationship is the driving force behind the movie and their courtship is handled well. Their chemistry is great. Ginnifer Goodwin (Vivian Cash) is also very strong in a supporting role. The music in this is very good. Doing your own singing when you’re playing such iconic people is a daunting task but they pull it off well. I also appreciated how much emotion this entire story elicits. Weaknesses: While I enjoyed the courtship of Johnny and June, their actual relationship didn’t work for me. It came across as Johnny being terrible for her and her not really wanting any part of it. There was a similar dynamic in A Star is Born, but it worked way better there. Here, when Johnny keeps asking her to marry him, I just kept wanting her to say no. It’s also a paint-by-numbers biopic where nothing really happens to make it special. The two plus hour runtime is a bit rough to get through at points. Overall: The relationship that drives the movie has severe issues and it hurts the plot. But Witherspoon and Phoenix are so great in the roles that it crosses over into recommended territory. [***]

77. The Black Cat. I liek cats. I’ve had a few black ones and they’re always my favourite. Bobo lived to be nineteen and she hated everyone except me. Toni just passed away, I think she was sixteen. She drooled a lot. Onyx doesn’t have a tail. He’s almost three. So it’s kind of hard for me to be scared of black cats. This had some cool ideas and I really liked the old mans relationship with the cat. Some of the stuff they did with the cat was gloriously cheesy too (the scene with the cat opening the door was really well done). But it didn’t do as much for me as the other Fulci movies I’ve seen. The gore just wasn’t there. And given what Fulci was able to do in the Beyond I think the afterlife/talking with the dead stuff could’ve been much more. I liked that this had a lot of people in it who were in some of his other movies though. It’s starting to feel like family.

#119 Batman6/23/89 | Director: Tim Burton | Rotten Tomatoes: 72% | Runtime: 126 minutes | Platform: HuluThe Plot: After a freak accident changes him physically, a maniacal criminal tortures the city and comes face to face with a caped superhero. Strengths: For me, Tim Burton can really be hit (Sweeney Todd, Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas) or miss (Dark Shadows, Alice in Wonderland). This was a hit, as he was a great choice to create the dark world of Gotham. Everything about the feel of the settings and tone of the movie works. Also, using Prince for the music seems like an odd choice, but worked wonderfully. Jack Nicholson does a great job as the Joker, only behind Heath Ledger for live action takes on the character. He has a blast with the comical, yet violent nature. Michael Keaton is a great Batman under the mask, though his Bruce Wayne wasn’t nearly as good. Though he didn’t get a ton to do, I enjoyed Billy Dee Williams as Harvey Dent. Everything involving the Joker after his accident is great and the highlight of the film. Weaknesses: As great as Nicholson’s performance was, he really overshadows Batman too often. He gets just as much screen time, if not more, and Batman feels underdeveloped. I didn’t like how it was revealed that the Joker killed Batman’s parents. That felt way too contrived to add some drama to their final encounter. It was one of those coincidences that was too over the top to believe. Speaking of the Joker, I didn’t love the choice to give him a backstory. I’ve always preferred a Joker who has no explanation for his actions. The Bruce Wayne/Vicki Vale romance felt forced and she became a bit too much of a major player for my taste. The Keaton/Basinger chemistry didn’t click well enough to make me care for it, either. A few of the action scenes don’t really hold up today. Overall: This is a unique take on Batman, but it’s one that mostly works. There are some top notch performances, especially Nicholson, that help move along a flawed story. Burton’s direction sets a great tone for a Batman film, which helps it stand out in a crowded superhero genre. [***½]

22) 2019-04-28 "The Return Of The Seven" - 1966Story: Chris and Vin return to Chico's village with a new team after they find that all the men have been kidnapped and forced into slavery. {Spoiler}
The first movie was a classic with a great ensemble cast... this one has only Yul Brynner returning, and he is front and center in everything in this movie, and the movie suffers because of it. I'm not saying everyone else is bad, but it feels like Brynner has demanded to be the "STAR" of the movie and the movie was crafted to placate his ego. The character of Vin (played by Robert Fuller) has gone from being a strong-willed character in his own right to a near-sniveling toady that only finds meaning in Chris' (Brynner) shadow. Everyone else has a moment where they look to Chris and say "I'da been nowhere if it weren't for you, Chris"... even the damn villain.
That's a shame, because there is an interesting plot, written by Larry Cohen ("It's Alive", "The Stuff", "Q the Winged Serpent"). The missing men are building a monument (a church) to the sons of a wealthy rancher, who feels guilty for pushing them into being ruthless and paying for their lives. They also have to convince the farmers to fight for themselves again, because they are just "simple people" and not worth fighting for. There's also some interesting background kinds laid out for the other of the Seven... but you never really get it between the action scenes (which were good) and the Yul Brynner Appreciation Society Segments.
So, it was OK but could have been a lot better.

78. Sleepaway Camp. There sure is a lot of young man ass in this movie. It’s one f***ed up movie actually. Lots of awkward sexual moments. The violence is spread out but the gore is good. Some incredible fashion. And the ending is really f***ed right up. The last shot is legitimately scary. But the highlight was the cops fake moustache. [EDIT] Robert Earl Jones, father of James Earl Jones, has a brief role in the first part of the movie and you can hear his son in his voice. THAT was cool to see. I liked this one.
