#216 - The Silence
Though the action is mostly solid, the rest of this lets them down. The characters are pretty flat and dumb, while the plot goes to a place that makes no real sense in the end. [**]

35) 2019-07-28 "Dredd" - 2012Story: In MegaCity 1, Judge Dredd and new recruit Anderson investigate three deaths in Peach Trees Block, uncovering a drug manufacturing operation... and then the gang leader Ma-Ma locks the building down. Dredd and Anderson have to fight their way through 200 floors of gang members to survive and bring Ma-Ma to justice. Love the original comic (what little I was able to find if it), hated the 90's "Judge Dredd" movie. This hits all the notes that Stallone's missed, which was pretty much everything. Urban nails the character, the sets look perfect, the effects are great... it's just great. Highly recommended.

There are a lot of confusing aspects to this movie. Thankfully, it remains mostly entertaining because of the tremendous cast, intriguing fourth wall breaks, and a solid script. [***½]

#218 - Laurel Canyon
The good acting from Bale, McDormand, and Beckinsale isn’t nearly enough to raise the rest of this film. It’s pretty boring, a little too odd, and ends with a whimper. [**]

88. Final Jeopardy (1985 TV movie) - For a TV movie from the 80s, it's very entertaining. Maybe I have a thing about movies like Judgment Night, where out-of-towners stumble upon a bad neighborhood and come across some dangerous folk, and this one was actually not too bad (I still need to watch Chains from 1989, if I can find a way; otherwise I'll have to buy the original VHS and then hook up my VCR; though I did like Enemy Territory, which I plan to revisit soon and maybe Tenement; I also plan to revisit Survive The Night from 1993). I enjoyed the performance from Richard Thomas, who starts off as an easygoing businessman, until things start to go downhill for him and his wife, played by Mary Crosby. For the most part, it's a tale of the couple surviving the night. The performances of the two leads really make this film watchable, as well as the story. Though the acting from the baddies was pretty hammy. Plus, certain things just don't make sense (Is 7 PM really a good time for businesses to close, especially bars?).
If you can look past certain flaws, I would recommend it.

220. Cemetery Man. Really enjoyable movie. Not really gory or scary, just good. 221. Cheerleader Camp. The only reason to watch this is pretty girls, of which there are lots. But the violence and gore is minimal. Good when it happens but far to infrequent. There are tons of better slasher camp movies. It stars Leif Garret, whose hair was thinning badly at this point. I did really like the ditzy girl.

89. Stuber - Okay, I have to say that I had fun watching this movie. Judging by what people had said, it's mixed. The chemistry between Batista (Yes, I know that his real name has the U in his surname, but being a longtime wrestling fan, I am more used to it without the U) and Kumail Nanjiani was great as they played well off of each other. It was their chemistry that made this movie watchable, but at the same time, there were some other funny scenes. Plus, I have a crush on Betty Gilpin (Debbie/Liberty Belle from GLOW), so it was nice to see her in the film. I had a gripe about one thing, though: {Spoiler}{SPOILER: CLICK TO SHOW}Okay, it was a nice little change for Stu to not only declare his love to Becca (Betty Gilpin's character) but decide he doesn't want to be with her, given the reasons (Becca's taste in men were more fitness/"hot guy" types. She saw Stu as mostly a friend, but also somewhat of a "Plan B" type of guy.
However, at the end, it showed that Nicole (Batista's character's daughter) was now dating Stu. It was four months later and I guess during that time, things could click, but it was more like "Huh?" Though in a way, I SORT OF saw it coming. Other than that, it was riddled with a bunch of buddy cop tropes that you would see, whether it's a crooked cop, using excessive force against potential informants, etc. It was a bunch of things you have seen before. But it's not a bad way to pass the time, either.

222. Frankenhooker. This movie was SO FUNNY. The concept and execution was hilarious but what really takes it to the next level is lead actor James Lorinz. He had a bit Part in Street Trash and killed it in every scene he was in but he carried this movie with brilliance. Patty Mullen (who plays Frankenhooker) is incredible too. They are two of the best “camp” actors I’ve ever seen. Not scary, not gory...lots of nudity but it’s easily PG-13 at its worst. Watch this movie if you like big, dumb fun. It was even funnier to me because I’m a licensed electrician and James’ characters theories are hilarious.

#219 - Teen Spirit
This doesn’t say or do anything particularly original and suffers from serious pacing problems. However, Elle Fanning is great and I liked Max Mingella’s work as a director enough to consider it slightly recommendable. [**½]

223. Aenigma. This was another “Fulci does Argento” flick. About madness at an all-girl boarding school or something (it might not be a boarding school, I wasn’t paying attention). Hmm, an all-girls school, why’s that familiar? It’s a good revenge story though. It’s just not gory enough to be a good Fulci movie or stylistically brilliant enough to be a good Argento movie.
