I am of the mind that if the 2016 Ghostbusters had the original characters with the same director, writers, and dialogue it would've been accepted universally.
Of course we all agree it wasn't nor is it the perfect film. It most definitely wasn't as horrible as a lot of fans made it out to be either.

No it really wouldn't have... for one the majority of the film was pretty blatantly improv'd, which doesn't really work for a sci-fi comedy... and with the quickfiring improv none of the jokes got a chance to breathe so even if they land there were at least 3 or 4 more jokes that didn't before you get a chance to process it. Though yeah you could change the dialogue... but... then plotwise you have a rather poor retelling of the original movie... almost beat for beat... only padded to hell... Characterwise as I've said Kristen Wiig really serves no purpose and can almost be removed entirely without changing much of the script, and Melissa McCarthy's character is pretty much scientist that likes soup. I don't blame the actresses at all... Feig was the wrong choice to direct this, a better director and tighter writing and it could have been a decent movie but as it stands it doesn't matter who was in the roles without that.

The plot to this new Ghostbusters movie sounds more like something I would have expected out of a Goosebumps movie.

I don't think anyone gives a shit if the original Ghostbusters train girls. The problem was that they made a shitty remake that happened to have females in it.

Majority of the complaints that I remember reading were more or less directed at the actresses. Since it wasn't any of the original characters or actors involved they had a lot of insults hurled their way. There were many nasty comments directed towards them on message forums, Twitter, Facebook, and I also remember a lot of racial remarks being thrown at Leslie Jones too. So I definitely believe a lot of the hate was simply because of them being women and not because of the film itself. It wasn't perfect nor was it up to par as far as the original is concerned. Although it definitely didn't deserve the harsh hate that it received in my opinion.

They only highlighted the sexist ones to sell a narrative to guilt trip people. A very poorly thought out tactic, and when it bombed they handled it even worse.

I will never forget Feig coming on shortly after all the hoopla on @midnight, insulting all the criticism it was getting, conflating all the haters as sexist, manboys. Life comes at you fast.

"That blue thing I got from her" alone is a better line than anything in the GB2016 script,

"Hey, let's take some very talented, funny actresses, hand them a terrible script, and give them nothing funny to do or say and slap the Ghostbusters IP all over it".

www.joblo.com/movie-news/jason-reitman-clarifies-recent-ghostbusters-comments-paul-feig-defends-himJASON REITMAN CLARIFIES RECENT GHOSTBUSTERS COMMENTS; PAUL FEIG DEFENDS HIM 13 hours ago by: Matt Rooney Recently it was announced that Jason Reitman, the Oscar-nominated director of JUNO and UP IN THE AIR, would be taking over the GHOSTBUSTERS franchise for a new movie that would be a direct sequel to the series from the 80s – both directed by his father, Ivan Reitman. There’s been a ton of discussion over the fact it would ignore the 2016 female-led reboot from Paul Feig, and even more, flames were fanned yesterday when Reitman the younger was quoted as saying “We are in every way trying to go back to original technique and hand the movie back to the fans.” RELATED: LESLIE JONES VOICES ANGER OVER NEW GHOSTBUSTERS; HOPES IT WON'T STAR ALL MEN The internet was sent into a whirlwind over the quote, with many fans of the original (and detractors of the reboot) being pleased with his comments, while more viewed his comments as troll-ish, dissing the new movie as not being honorable to the fans. But Reitman has come out and clarified his comments (given during an interview on the Bill Burr Monday Morning Podcast), saying he has nothing but respect for the 2016 movie. Wo, that came out wrong! I have nothing but admiration for Paul and Leslie and Kate and Melissa and Kristen and the bravery with which they made Ghostbusters 2016. They expanded the universe and made an amazing movie! Jason Reitman ✔ @jasonreitman Wo, that came out wrong! I have nothing but admiration for Paul and Leslie and Kate and Melissa and Kristen and the bravery with which they made Ghostbusters 2016. They expanded the universe and made an amazing movie! 3,222 6:59 PM - Feb 20, 2019 Twitter Ads info and privacy 1,326 people are talking about this RELATED: PAUL FEIG'S GHOSTBUSTERS SEQUEL WOULD HAVE SEEN THE TEAM GO GLOBAL What’s more, Feig himself retweeted Reitman’s response with his own message of support for the director. “Jason was a supporter of mine at a time when I couldn’t get movies made,” he wrote. “He has always been a true gentleman to me and a supporter of Ghostbusters: Answer the Call. I can’t wait to see his take on the Ghostbusters universe. Big love and respect to you, Jason. Your fan, Paul.” Paul Feig ✔ @paulfeig Jason was a supporter of mine at a time when I couldn’t get movies made. He has always been a true gentleman to me and a supporter of Ghostbusters: Answer the Call. I can’t wait to see his take on the Ghostbusters universe. Big love and respect to you, Jason. Your fan, Paul Jason Reitman ✔ @jasonreitman Wo, that came out wrong! They expanded the universe and made an amazing movie! 1,813 12:28 AM - Feb 21, 2019 Twitter Ads info and privacy 399 people are talking about this While it’s easy to look at Reitman’s initial quote and think he’s bashing the 2016 movie – saying the franchise needs to go “back to the fans,” thus implying the new movie took it away from them – the reality is he probably just made a poor choice of words. He has already spoken highly of the new movie before, talking to EW about how much he liked it and how he had “so much respect” for what the cast and Feig did. The fact of the matter is no matter what is said about the movie it will always be scrutinized against either the 2016 movie or the originals, which will just add stress to the making of this new movie. Really, it may just be best to not talk about it at all until it’s time to promote.

What’s crazy about all of this is anyone can be a Ghostbuster. Like Spider-Man, it’s one of those franchises where anyone could be in their shoes. They’re random guys that just had to save the world. Winston was hired without an interview half way through the movie. One of the jokes in the movie is they were thinking how much they could make on franchising costs alone.
Look at the ghost corps that have groups all around the country, their name tags don’t say Venkman, it’s the last name of the fan dressed up. Now you see them dressing in the OG suits and remake ones. It’s really cool to see.
Training new Busters was already done in 90s cartoon and the video game. Maybe that was something that should have been imbraced in the first one even if the first scene is Winston is throwing keys at them and telling them good luck.
But look

"Hey, let's take some very talented, funny actresses, hand them a terrible script, and give them nothing funny to do or say and slap the Ghostbusters IP all over it". sigh. Exactly. I'm more than willing to give credence to the idea of toxic fandom. Heck, just look at some of the comments about Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Black Panther, and even Captain Marvel as those movies came out or are about to come out. Yet I also think that those who were pro-GB:AtC consider the fact that those who hate it simply hate it on the merits that it looked like (and in my opinion is) a crappy movie. Oh yay, jokes about queffs! Endless talking! It also didn't help the director and stars came out to portray the fans as knuckle dragging neanderthals. As I said before, people got way too obsessed over a movie designed to sell ecto-cooler and papa john's pizza. Redlettermedia (as those guys always do) summed it up best in their Mr. Plinkett review of GB 2016.

Ad libs? So if you're Bowzer from Sha-Na-Na, that would make this the only honest version of Ghostbusters? (Go on Twitter to get this reference)

I honestly wonder if Feig wanted to make this movie at all.
The story pretty much matching the first movie beat for beat.
And pretty much not directing and just letting them ad lib apparently sometimes for hours.
Doesn't really read like someone that wanted to be there.
I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out The no it has to be a complete reboot being him trying to get Amy Pascal to leave him alone.

I wonder what would have happened if the 2016 film was made, but was called something other than Ghostbusters like Ghoulkillers or Spirit Hunters.
