I was chatting about this the other day with some friends. And I genuinely believe this is the greatest action film of all time. The only other films that crossed my mind were Raiders of the Lost Ark and that's more of an adventure film and Hard Boiled. As much as I love Hard Boiled, Die Hard just edges it for me. Is this the best out and out action film ever?

Someone hasn't seen the Scorpion King, methinks.
On a serious note, I don't think it is. It's up there, definitely, but I think there are better ones. *compiling a short list*

I completely agree with you. Die Hard is the greatest action movie ever. Raiders is an adventure film. Here's my short list of the films that come close
The Terminator (though it's very much sci-fi) First Blood True Lies Lethal Weapon
I'll probably think of some more later, but Die Hard is definitely the measuring stick.

Die Hard is my second favorite, the greatest action movie in my eyes is Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

Meh. Ranking them seems to defeat the purpose. Die Hard kicks all sorts of ass. I love the first two Terminator flicks (the third one...my god...what a horrid film), and the first two Letha Weapon flicks are just flat out badass.
Die Hard With a Vengeance is also great, and I'm seriously looking forward to Live Free or Die Harder.

I'm seriously looking forward to Live Free or Die Harder. They're not calling it that in Europe. It's being called Die Hard 4.0. (so some places are saying).

I don't know if there's a definite Best Action Movie of all Time... but there's a group of them that sit at the top and Die Hard is defintely in that group. I'm waiting for the 4th one with bated breath.

I always prefered Die Hard with a Vengence over the Original. But I agree that Die Hard is one of the best action films ever.

Die Hard has the Carl Winslow edge. Does Hard Boiled have Carl Winslow? I think not

If we did a best action movie kind of poll, I'd be horrendously pissed that Steve McQueen would, due to the age of most posters here, not get his due. The Great Escape = greatness.
