I wrote a massive essay on here about Randy Savage's WWE run and how it had an amazing logical consistent arc with fantastic payoffs. The only other wrestler I can think of that had that is Mick Foley. That moment was magical.

This thread has reminded me what a moment that was. It was great.

As rough as Mankind could be, Mick switching to Cactus was always a sign that "okay, now the really vicious stuff happens".
It was years of character work and hardcore matches to get that cache, and it absolutely worked like a charm here. Triple H sold it like a champ as well.
Still one of my favourite moments. Even funnier that both him and Triple H had already done much the same together when Cactus returned at MSG in '97!

Mick Foley's character work was off the charts. How many wrestlers can't even get one character into a place where they're so perfectly expressed? Foley did that with several and was able to make them so distinct that a simple in-the-moment transformation could make for a huge dramatic moment in a medium without any film tricks or editing techniques to convey it. It's hard to think of many characters in that same multiple personality vein who could do it better than Mick Foley.

19 years ago. That’s insane. The Attitude Era is becoming so long ago now. We’re about as close on the timeline to Austin shoving Mike Tyson as that moment was to Superstar Billy Graham beating Bruno Sammartino for the WWWF Title.

Silly Alvarez. Things may sound daft on paper, but work in reality or in context. This certainly worked, though HHH's look of horror helped massively. Went from mocking Foley for weeks to be in a panic.
One of the first Smackdowns aired in the UK!
And I can well remember the general wrestling chatter at school went over a weekend from "Mankind's old and can't wrestle anymore" to "OMG! Cactus Jack is going to kill Triple H!" with one promo segment.
It worked! And Foley's one of the only people who could have made it work.

This is what made me do a total 180 on Triple H. I could not stand him, never could. I thought his character was obnoxious, dull, etc. His heel turn at Mania 15 got me a little interested, but mainly because I liked seeing even more annoying X-Pac get beat up. But even that quickly faded.
So I was dying for Foley to tear him apart at the Rumble. Triple H was tormenting him, and I couldn't wait for the street fight. So, Rumble night comes, and I have some friends over.
The match is fantastic, Triple H is bleeding like crazy. But somewhere during the match, I go, "Wow. Triple H is getting destroyed for my entertainment." And for that reason, I gained a ton of respect for him, and I actually started pulling for Triple H to win.
I was happy when he did, and I was a fan from that night forward. Don't get me wrong, I can criticize him no problem, but that feud with Foley made him and put him in the big time. They both played their parts perfectly. And while I was always a Foley fan, Triple H stepped way up and made me go from hoping he would go away to becoming one of my favorites of all time.
