I remember this.
Instead of saying "From ___________", they'd say "Now residing in _____________". I believe the prevailing thought was "American fans would be more likely to cheer for them if they were billed from American cities.
I also want to say it was around the time of the UnAmericans, who retained their original hometown declarations because they didn't have to worry about getting people to cheer for them.

early to Mid 00s. I remember it, they would announce it at times from there Canadian land but yet resigned to whatever place in the US. It was away to gain a pop or heat depending on what they where. I recall Jericho doing a Hightlight Reel with HBK in Canada and they had all the heat on HBK and loved Jericho and Jericho said something about moving out to try and get himself the heat since he was the heel.

I remember in 03-04 Jericho being announced as “Now residing in Manhattan, New York.” Also, I think Benoit they dropped or didnt do the “now residing” and straight up said he was from Atlanta, Georgia. Yknow what else grinds my gears? People from Japan just being announced as “From Japan.” |

Yeah, the whole thing was just stupid and I'm glad that was relatively shortlived. And that they eventually got out of the habit of, say, every Japanese wrestler either being billed from just "Japan" or from Tokyo.

I think the most insulting one was when Gail Kim went from being from Toronto to just "Korea." Just Korea. Like that totally clears up everything about her nationality.

I’m so glad the stars from Japan actually have hometowns. For me it helps them seem more legit. Hearing Kairi Sane is from Yamaguchi, Japan instead of just Japan makes her seem real, and not just a stereotype like the Orient Express were.

Or Nakamura hailing from Kyoto. For a while, it was either they were from just their country, and some nationalities would always be from the capital city or most populous city, regardless of where they actually lived or grew up. Imagine if Shinsuke, Asuka, Kairi, Io, Tozawa, and Hideo were all billed from Tokyo. |

The only time saying they were "from Japan" wouldn't be insulting would be if you were doing a tag team and they're from different places there, but then again, you often don't go into where they're billed from with a tag team, anyway, unless it's a key part of their identity, like with the Machine Guns or the Road Warriors.
