Mark Henry's returning backstage to fix lockerroom bs

Thought this was pretty interesting. Mark Henry was on Sam Roberts's wrestling podcast this week. Pretty much said he's gonna be at the shows keeping things in the locker room on lock due to bullshit with today's talent backstage.

If you don't wanna listen then I got it transcribed for you since I was bored. H is Henry, S is Sam.

H - "Me being gone this last year and a half there's a lot of stuff that's happened in this locker room that never would have happened under my watch."

S - "Like what? You don't have to get specific with names but as far as you want to go."

H - "People arguing, fussing about stuff, there's been some 'disrespecting my wife or my girlfriend' type of stuff. There's been a couple of people be habitually late in which Vince hates but he doesn't have Taker or me. Booker's not there, only at tv. Big Show's been injured. All the guys that hold people's face to the fire aren't there."

S - "Was Roman that guy?"

H - "Roman was kinda that guy, he was kinda getting there."

S - "Cena maybe?"

H - "No. John's on his bus off to the next place."

S - "He's got so much going on."

H - "Yeah, he's got so much to do but he will go 'ok guys, this place is a pig sty, don't leave your trash' you know.

S - "Right."

H - "These young guys now, somebody told me that they asked some young guy to clean up and they said 'man it ain't my job to clean up.'"

S - "Wow."

H - "That shit is finna come to an abrupt stop cause I will be at all tvs, at all ppvs now."

S - "Oh really?"

H - "Yeah and this is really new like the last 2 weeks. Every ppv, there's gonna be issues with people in the locker room. We finna reestablish the leadership chain of command."

S - "So you're going into all ppvs and tv and whatnot and you're taking a more behind the scenes roll of -"

H - "Just to keep everybody's checks and balances I mean there's no title for it."

S - "Wow. Just so your presence is there."

H - "Yeah."

S - "That's not a position that's existed."

H - "Right, I mean you never had to do that."

S - "But you actually like that."

H - "I like structure. I like discipline. I like people doing the right thing. I don't like the perception of me walking into the room and people being like 'oh my God it's one of those wrestlers' because somebody screwed it up, the image. They tarnished the way people see us. Back in the old days guys used to wreck hotel rooms, trash rental cars and all of that dumb stuff and when I came into wrestling they were like 'we're, we're out of cars' 'you're one of those wrestlers no?' and it was like that and we had to recreate and re-establish trust. Me, The Rock and Kane and D-Lo Brown, Brian Christopher, Scotty 2 Hotty you know the young guys back then 20 years ago. We were reaping the benefits of people being buttholes."

S - "Right and you had to fix that and now you have to go in and make sure the buttholeness doesn't return."

H - "Right, I don't want it to regress. We've worked too hard man."

S - "And your purpose was not so that it was good for you but your purpose was what the industry standard should be."

H - "And justifiably so."

He goes on and talks more. He said that BSK was the guys holding this order back in the day. Taker and the dudes didn't take shit.

EDIT: Henry also suggested that he'd tell Vince to fine guys if it came to that. He doesn't care if he's called a stooge either.

Good, if it keeps people from being at each other's throats. You really don't want Enzos or Hunicos(to a lesser extent) becoming a thing and making everyone miserable, or it's going to come to a head. These people put their bodies in each others' hands, you need to have mutual respect, and you need to not be grating on each others' nerves.

That, and leaving trash around like that example is just shitty behavior. Don't do that to custodians.

I know the locker room is more chill and relaxed now, but I didn't think it was to the point where guys are turning up to the arena late and are cool with leaving the place a mess. I mean, it's good that Mark is gonna be back there to enforce discipline, just as long as things don't go back to the way they were with the alpha bully bullshit.

There was a report going around a few months ago that Braun had heat because he kept showing up late or something.

Wrestler’s Court could actually do some good for the locker room.
Wrestlers screwing others over on hotel rooms, car hire, that kind of thing ,then wrestler’s court did go some way to addressing those problems and making people financially pay for it before it turns into fights. It could also address issues like discussed above, people leaving the locker room in a shitty state.

However, hazing or JBL waiting in the showers with a bar of soap? That shit can f*** off and never come back.

Hmm. All TV? Smackdown and Raw? I'd have thought AJ Styles, Sheamus and Cesaro would be three guys who would make sure people were respectful on Smackdown. Raw does look like it might lack some of that leadership, though.

I am slightly reminded of a relatively recent interview with Aleister Black, he said he was in the locker room and began cleaning up after everyone because that's how he was trained the new guy does the grunt work... and he was told not to... as everyone should deal with their own shit.

Yeah, people like to mock wrestler's court (and sometimes rightfully so with that bottom half) but the idea behind it and player's court where it comes from was for that purpose.

I imagine that it might have soured some, given the frustrations a lot of WWE folk have been dealing with, or because of new callups and roster shakeups. Like, there's no equivalent to the Bulldogs or Steiners putting people through bullshit that we've heard of, but does sound like some people might be like when Big Show came to the WWF and had never really learned etiquette and professionalism, that WCW really wasn't a great learning environment for that kind of thing.

I think the wrestlers, by and large, get on much better now than they did in the past. You hear a lot less about rivalries and heat and petty bickering than you used to, and this is with social media being omnipresent. We see them hanging out in various videos, either away from the WWE or backstage. Videogaming seems to have replaced coke and strippers as the downtime hobby of choice.

The mentalities of a lot of wrestlers seem to be different, these days. Less guarding your spot, more just getting along. Some people will criticise, and push the idea that "if you're not in this business to be the number one guy, you shouldn't be in this business", but I don't really agree with that. Being ambitious is great, but so is just being content to do good work and be a reliable, trustworthy guy.

In a lot of ways, it's much healthier and more conducive to co-workers getting on. But perhaps the downside is that everyone just feels a bit too relaxed, especially without a vocal locker room leader.
