I admit that I just didn't get it for years and years, but over time, I've come to understand a fundamental truth about this kind of thing.
If I call the cops, there exists the chance that this all plays out badly for me, and some clerical error results in me getting shot. It's much lower than the chances for many other people, and furthermore, if it did happen to me and not them, there wouldn't be talking heads on 24-hour news channels asking if I have ever had a library book, or made a made face in a picture on myspace. Anything to say that maybe I deserved to get killed for butt dialing 911.
In that reality, yeah, you don't call the cops.

Depends.
I wouldn’t snitch on a drug dealer. It’s none of my business.
But if I witnessed something horrible, I think I’d HAVE to say something.
Again, depends on the situation. I ain’t risking my life just to protect some guy I never met before. I probably wouldn’t even get a thanks anyway.

Why wouldn't people call the police on a drug dealer? They bring crime to your neighborhood. Not just the fact that selling drugs is illegal, but they also bring in a criminal element that will commit other crimes. What happens if a drug deal goes bad and someone starts shooting? You run the risk of being caught in the shooting or having someone you care about caught in the school.
If you want to break the law, then you risk your freedom. I'm sorry that's not something I'm going to feel bad about. This whole no snitching thing is for posturing teenagers and real gangsters. Which I'm sure most of us aren't. I can guarantee that none of these criminals care about us, so why care about them? They aren't doing anything productive or helpful for society.

Well that is more a question of what was brought up before. Its intimidation and manipulation, not morally wrong.

"Snitch" is the word a child would use. I'm so far removed from that kind of mindset that it seems alien to me.

I hate to be that guy, but No Snitching? Isn't that something that only kids care about? Check this out: I know it's beside the point but I always found the look on the snitching guy's face while he's snitching to be utterly hilarious.

There was a shooting around the corner from my house years ago. I remember the date specifically, because I was watching Obama's inauguration.
Anyways, it was dumbass kids. But one ran down my street and was caught by the cops on their way to where it started. Now, gunshots in real life don't sound like movie gunshots, so it sounded like somebody hammering.
So, the cops sweep my street for others, and ask me if I saw anything. Being completely honest, I say no, but I heard the shots. I also saw the kid run down the street, but he ran right towards a cop car.
So later that night, the cops call me. They ask if I can come down and write a statement. The station is right down the hill, but I still drove. I walk in, and the cop takes me to a desk where a massive german shepherd is sitting.
I write a brief statement, which I knew wouldn't be any help, because all I heard were about five or six shots. I don't know why they called me. But as I'm writing, they were going in on somebody in the next room.
Like, "Look! You need to give us names! Don't throw your motherf***ing life away over this stupid shit!" I couldn't wait to get out of there. Nobody saw me, and I was never contacted again, so...I told them I wouldn't be much help.
But I have no problem helping, but I sure as hell ain't getting involved if I don't have to.

If I have kids, the official policy will be “Snitches get Snickers” I would be ratting everyone out for the most harmless of offenses...

When talking about ratting out people for the most trivial of offenses, like smoking weed somewhere or fapping in a bathroom stall, that, in my opinion, makes me lose respect for someone. To me, there is a line drawn between doing the right thing, and just ratting on someone to get the person in trouble. The difference? The latter seems to be more of a case of trying to screw someone over.

I have no issues with you protecting yourself from harm or others but I have horrible disdain for anyone that is also taking part in a bad action that gets arrested then turns on other people to get leniency and no i dont care if it was a drug dealer..Im my opinion he was providing you a service and you broke that code not because it was the right thing to do to protect others but it was the thing that would save your ass

Don't want to risk getting in trouble for doing something wrong/illegal?
Then don't do something wrong/illegal.

Drug dealers don't bring crime to your neighborhood in the way you think. The people that buy drugs are going to get them from somewhere. Those that sell drugs are simply providing supply for the demand. No one forces anyone else to do drugs. And people can get shot for anything really. Drug deals don't lead to gun violence nearly as often as you probably imagine they do.
