So I’m currently doing acting classes and I’m really enjoying it. I’ve only done extras work in the past so I have no real experience in an actual role. I want to make a career out of this... maybe not in Hollywood but enough to pay the bills.
What qualifications do I need to be considered “an actor”? Like what separates me from the actual actors apart from getting casted in a role? Do I need any certificates or anything like that to audition for a role, or is it a matter of performing a monologue and getting lucky?
What are some steps to boost my chances? I was thinking about getting a photoshoot done and setting up a Facebook page. I think if people see that dedication towards me trying to get my name out there, maybe they’ll take me more seriously.
Anyone have any real experience in the industry? Need advice.

Sure.
Though I’m not exactly sure what you want.
If you’re strictly interested in getting cast for extra work, there’s a few agencies, central casting, LA casting, you typically have to wait at some appointments, make it official and they’ll send you out to get extra work. Which might I add pays nicely these days. My girlfriends been doing it for a few months now and she gets steady work (though she also has a good look).
Headshots are okay. But I’m assuming you don’t have a lot of prior experience so not a lot to put on a resume? Don’t go broke getting headshots. A lot of people overprice.
I don’t know what you’d need to “call yourself an actor” man..lol. I don’t think the Facebook page is a good idea. My advice is keep Taking acting classes, look in other things you might be good at within the same realm: physical choreography, dance, make up, costuming, tech, etc. Audition for plays or short movies. (Dunno where you’re from but most tend to be open to people) and connections, connections, connections. That’s key.

According to a certain conspiracy theory, I’m an actor.

I want to make a career out of this... maybe not in Hollywood but enough to pay the bills. Realistically, most actors who aren't Hollywood (and even some who are) don't pay the bills through their acting unless they get lucky enough to secure a regular gig through a TV show or touring stage company. I second the advice to just keep taking lessons and keep doing auditions for anything you can get your hands on, no matter how small, as building a strong showreel helps get you those auditions. Aim high, but expect low - an actor's life, especially early on, involves a lot of rejection.

Live action isn't my expertise, though I have 13 years as a TV cartoon/commercial voice guy and occasional casting director as my only needed means of income. A lot of the advice given here has been very good, though I will say (much to my chagrin) a social media presence actually is gradually becoming more desired from talents in certain circles.
It's not unheard of for auditioning talents to be asked how many Twitter or Instagram followers they have.

It's not unheard of for auditioning talents to be asked how many Twitter or Instagram followers they have. I have almost 4,000 followers on Twitter. Though it’s nothing to do with my acting... I was going to set up a social media page people can “like”, completely rebrand it towards my acting career. Get a proper photoshoot with headshots, and in the mean time audition for “short films” even if I don’t get paid for it, it would get my name out there and give me something to put on my CV and hand to potential employers. I know a lot of people who are looking for actors to star in their YouTube videos aswell so that is a possibly I’m considering. I don’t want to be cringe about it haha. Not many people know I’m doing this whole acting gig so if they see my “acting pages”, they might think I’m a dork. I imagine marketing and having a relative following online would play a big factor in getting casted.

You don't necessarily need to be cringe in how you handle your social media as an actor, espeeeecially on Twitter. Most of my actor friends have Facebook pages focused on their work, meanwhile their Twitter is 85% talk of Pokemon and pictures of their cats, with the occasional role announcement. Heh. Try to lose this one, though. The past tense is actually "cast".
