I know the franchise is seen as kind of a product of the 90's and it definitely is, but IMO this was my favorite part of the Spawn property. It blows the movie away, for sure. This was a really atmospheric and well-voiced show with cool animation.

Absolutely. I've always loved the HBO Spawn animated series due to the atmosphere and emotion of the story. You felt a strong sense of conflict within the character of Al Simmons. Add to the fact that there is a dark gothic nature to it as well. Clown/The Violator is still a creepy villain, Billy Kincaid makes the skin crawl, and that image of Spawn climbing up the church to tear down the cross is one of the most emotional and epic moments of the show.
The live action film is a guilty pleasure. I just feel they were too overly ambitious and probably could've waited until the technology was available to actually do it right.

Funny story about this show - when I was a kid my mom loved the live action movie and rented the second release of the cartoon - labelled as Spawn 2 - thinking it was a sequel, only to turn it off right away when she discovered it was animated.
I have no idea why this was a dealbreaker for her considering she's a massive Nightmare Before Christmas fangirl.

So I found this series on Amazon Video awhile back and decided to marathon it. I'm not gonna lie, I hated every second of it. Incredibly slow, incredibly boring, dark and dreary only for the sake of being dark and dreary. Every problem Spawn had it felt like he could've solved it, and most of the other problems in this universe, in a grand total of 30 seconds if he actually ever decided to just get off his ass and do something, anything. But nope, he needs that time to whine and brood in an alley. I just do not get its appeal at all.

Funny enough, both Savage Dragon and Spawn were surprisingly pretty good all things considered.

I much prefer the comic books of both Savaga Dragon and Spawn. Spawn was amazing when McFarlane was still drawing it, and Savage Dragon is still good to this day.

The cartoon was great. McFarlane trying act in a haunted house was not.
