The topic of passed away musicians came up at work recently. I said I felt really sad when Ronnie James Dio died. One of my coworkers went "Who?" and I was going to say something fierce, but then it hit me. He was 12 when Ronnie passed, and not a fan of metal so he wouldn't have heard of him later anyway.. I felt super old,

I was online recently and some pretty awesome dude on a freakin' awesome message board referred to Ronnie James Dio as "kind of an obscure person" and I immediately felt super old.

I hear stuff like this across all forms of media all the time, and it really hits me that I'm in my 30s now. For example, just the other day, I was on break at work and overheard two teenagers talking music, specifically about how System of a Down is a classic rock band. Yup. Had to restrain myself from being the crazy old man for a second. Last summer some friends threw me a surprise birthday party. As I was opening my gifts, their 9 year old son asked how old I was. Told him 44. "WOW So you are almost a senior citizen now!" Asked him how old he had thought I was. Got told that he thought I was his parents age. They are late 20s. But then my hairline hasn't moved. Unless I grow out my beard I have very little grey hair. And no wrinkles.

First time I overheard something that made me feel old was a teenager working in a restaurant with me saying he was 2 when the Sept 11th attack happened. People mistake me for about 10 years older than I am anyway, but that one hit the ego kind of hard.

Haha my radio station does a resurrection noon hour Monday-Saturday, generally 80s and 90s but they've recently started playing Saliva, Drowning Pool and other late 90s/early 00s songs in there. Then I realize it's about 20 years old some of it and ugh Saliva and Drowning Pool...some things should just stay buried lol

Laat week there was a small group of teens loitering behind my workplace playing loud music... the one song I recognized was "In Da Club". That song is from 2003, those kids' parents probably conceived those kids to that song!

I mean, that's still a shot in the dark (wrong Sabbath guy, I know that joke's coming), but it'd be a start. Uhh, maybe he'd know Holy Diver?

The young woman was correct. The Truman Show is bad. Truman Show was one of my "rent X number of videos, get one rental free" card rentals and thank goodness it was. Wound up watching a few minutes of it and putting it back in the case for return.

Good lord. But I suppose now that life moves at the speed of memes... ...still, it's crazy to think that Michael Jordan is that far back in the rearview mirror now.

Well, a lot of those references are pretty dated and irrelevant if you're 20. Michael Jordan hasn't been a big name in basketball since the mid-90's (you should have told her "You know, the guy from Space Jam!" which she might have seen). MC Hammer hasn't been anything big in music since about 1994. Monica Lewinsky was over 20 years ago and Skeletor is from He-Man which was popular in the early/mid-80's. The Exorcist is from the 70's and I wouldn't expect anyone under 40 to know about that movie unless they're into horror movies. The newest thing on that list (the Monica Lewinsky scandal) happened the year she was born and she may have learned about who she is in a history class (but I kind of doubt it).

I just meant that we shouldn't be surprised that someone who's 20 doesn't know about those people / topics (just really depressed....).

the only thing that gives me pause about that really is Exorcist was made into a tv series that was canceled last season but it never did fantastic in ratings so unless they watch Fox a lot, I could see how even that would bypass someone's notice. I know I've had to read up on a lot of stuff from the 90s because I was too young or sheltered to really get it, much less things that happened before I was born.

I am 11 years older than my girlfriend and end up having explain lots of my references to her. Like years ago she had gotten her mother some kind of porcelain doll. She was showing me this pale white doll, that was covered with bubble wrap. "She's dead...Wrapped in plastic!"She looked at me funny. Then I realized she was 6 or so when Twin Peaks was originally airing.
Pretty much any reference I make to 70s or 80s stuff she doesn't get. But then I don't get her references to 2000s to current day music and pop culture. Thanks to her I learned the Ralph Mouth looking singer guy is Ed Sheeren.
