Teenage girl- Have you seen that movie the Truman Show?
Boyfriend- No
Her- My dad made us watch it last night. It's horrible! My dad likes it.
I didn't turn around and say 'tell your dad he's right young lady!'
But I thought bout it.

While I was in there, I looked at the science fiction/fantasy section to see if they had Enemy Among Us on the shelf.
They didn't, nor did I expect them to.
I looked though cuz I discovered a month ago you CAN get it off their website.
I marked out a bit.

I like Truman Show, but I've got to wonder if it just loses something if you're seeing it now. Reality TV has been deconstructed like a billion times over, and while I think it did it better than most, it's going to probably feel a bit old hat if you've seen a lot of that already.

That was honestly my thought too; in a post reality show world it probably doesn't resonate.
But I'm an old man.

I heard someone say a few weeks ago about how they loved the recent version of A Star is Born but nothing compared to the original with Barbra Streisand. The temptation to correct them was hard to resist.

Years back I was buying the DVD of Prom Night 2. The cashier looked at it and said "That came out fast. We saw the first one at the movies earlier this year."
At first I thought she had seen a revival screening of the original. ..then realized she was a teenager and was talking about the Prom Night remake.

When my son was about four we were at a Barnes and Noble. He wasn’t being even bratty or loud just a normal little kid but he got shushed by an old man reading a book in a chair. I gave the guy an evil look and told my son rather loudly “Honey, you have to be more quite people are trying to use this store as a library.”

I hear stuff like this across all forms of media all the time, and it really hits me that I'm in my 30s now. For example, just the other day, I was on break at work and overheard two teenagers talking music, specifically about how System of a Down is a classic rock band. Yup. Had to restrain myself from being the crazy old man for a second.

Actual conversation from my bookstore (not B&N):
Female customer, age approx 25 or so: I'm looking for your Jane Austen books
My co-worker Jeff: They're in our Fiction section right over there.
Female customer, raising her voice in mild surprised outrage: Jane Austen was not fictional! She was a real person!
Jeff: Yes ma'am, but the books she wrote are in the Fiction section.

Him: Hawkeye was in it. Me: Alan Alda? Him: Who? Me: Hawkeye Him: What? Alan Alda is Hawkeye.
Apparently Hawkeye is also some comic book character?

Haha my radio station does a resurrection noon hour Monday-Saturday, generally 80s and 90s but they've recently started playing Saliva, Drowning Pool and other late 90s/early 00s songs in there. Then I realize it's about 20 years old some of it and ugh

Maybe 15 years ago, I worked at a B&N. Not bad, as far as customer service jobs go. And they were were super cool about letting all the "associates" order whatever books, movies, and music they wanted. So if you had a store with a bunch of people into really niche stuff, you'd find that stuff on the shelves.
Anyway, more than once, I had people buy books from some conservative pundit or another. Almost without fail, they'd be like "I don't care about your opinion, just ring up the book" and I'm like "I wouldn't have ordered these if I didn't want people to *buy* them."
Had a manger ask me why I kept ordering "controversial" stuff for the shelves (despite not being a fan at all) and I just told her "people buy it. People see some book or other on some pundit show and they come here looking for it. If they don't find it, they'll just buy it on Amazon or do without." That was pretty much the end of the discussion.
Good place to work. Some of the best co-workers I ever had. Lost touch with most of 'em, but hope they're doing okay.

The young woman was correct. The Truman Show is bad.
