Nah, Verne pushed his scrawny [relative to other pro wrestlers] son to beat much bigger and better opponents a lot over the years eventhough Greg was never actually the best in the world. Vince, on the other hand.... wait just a minute!! Shane is the best in the world though, he has a trophy to prove it

“Well, I’ve been doing this 50 years. Stamford, Connecticut born and bred. I am Sports Entertainment. My son Shane will never run the company. He’s a bitch.” A lapsed take.

I mean, in Verne's defense it only really became like that after WWF and Vince took all of his talent and copied what he was doing wholesale (not unlike what they'd do in the 90's with ECW).
That said, there definitely was a point that AWA needed new blood to keep it afloat after Vince did all of that and Verne refused to let go.
There are a lot of parallels between Verne then and Vince now though.

Vince has not killed anyone yet no, but he did help a wrestler cover-up a murder (Snuka), and he was in his right mind when he did it.

Well both have talentless sons, although Verne hated Greg. I can’t blame Verne, his son was talentless.
He was in the business for thirty years, a farm boy, he was Minnesota, Greg was a bitch though.

He can... Now, but with all the reports of people leaving, in a few years the landscape might be different. If you look at all the talent the AWA had in the mid 80s, the Road Warriors, Rick Martel, Curt Hennig, The Rockers etc. they had all the talent they needed to flip the switch... Till they didn't. Talent wasn't why Verne failed. He let Hogan leave because he wanted the merch money and wasn't willing to let him keep working New Japan, basically his stubbornness is why Hogan left. Like you said, Verne had plenty of talent, he just wasn't willing to get with the times. While Bockwinkel was a very talented wrestler, the fact that he was champion in 1987 at 50 years old is very telling. Bockwinkle at 50 was as good as any person in the industry at that time. Still capable of 60 minute Broadway's, imo the best promo in the business asst the time. Bockwinkle wasn't the problem.

Greg Gagne took off his cowboy boot and went upside King Kong Brody's head in defense of his friend Jerry Blackwell. He did well.

He was a damn good worker even at 50, but the point was he shouldn't have still been his ace at that point of his career. Yuji Nagata stole the show in his last G1 at the same age, but he only won a single match in the tournament, because you don't build a company around a wrestler that is 50 years old even if they can still go at a high level.

Vince, on the other hand.... wait just a minute!! Greg was pushed, yes, but never at the expense of his actual main eventers. Greg was never AWA champion. The better analogy would be 1989 Larry Zbysko as AWA champ (and Larry actually was Verne’s son-in-law).

No, Greg did have talent and was a much better worker than he was given credit for. He was, however, seen as a relic during the 80’s because he didn’t have the steroid addled bodybuilder physique. But Greg’s body was not that much different than CM Punk’s.

And HHH also won his final world championship by winning a Royal Rumble, just like Larry winning the AWA belt by winning a battle royal.

I think Vince is and always has been a much better businessman when it comes to o wrestling than a creative genius. Is that why he is wasting millions on a sure to fail XFL?

But at the same time, he wasn't ever pushed as the top star.
