Okay, so let's talk about Don Mancini's inspiration for Chucky from Child's Play. He said it was based on the Cabbage Patch Kids craze and how popular they were. But I think the Chucky doll design and concept itself was based on a few different things. 1. My Buddy (1985) with the overalls and striped rainbow shirt. The hairstyles and facial features are similar between the two. 2. Corky from Playmates (circa 1987): Corky was voiced by child actor Eden Gross and if he sounds familiar it's because he also provided the voice of the Good Guy dolls in Child's Play and Child's Play 2 (I.E: when Chucky is pretending to be a regular talking doll). I just thought that was sort of an interesting connection.

I'd wonder if he also saw that one Twilight Zone episode at one point too.
And I totally had a My Buddy....and cut most of his hair off.

I always thought Chucky was based on My Buddy.

It has to be My Buddy. Didn't know it was possible to think otherwise haha. Initial idea for doll as horror movie antagonist may have been Cabbage Patch; but My Buddy IS Chucky haha

Just seeing the words "My Buddy" puts that damn song back into my head.
How could that NOT be the origins of Chucky?

In the remake, his name (or brand name whatever) has been changed to Buddi, so yeah.

He said it was based on the Cabbage Patch Kids craze and how popular they were. Director Tom Holland has always always insisted the design was based off of the 'My Buddy' doll: I feel like maybe the original draft of the first movie had more of a connection to Cabbage Patch Kids, but the incarnation that made it to the screen certainly was all 'My Buddy'.

They are literally wearing the same shirt. the biggest difference is Chucky wears blue overalls and my Buddy wears red.

Yeah, I think the Cabbage Patch influence was how popular the dolls were, not the actual look of em.

Another interesting fact I found out was that Ruby-Spears did the animation for the "Good Guys" cartoon segments. This was back when R-S was a subsidiary of Hanna-Barbera, meaning that technically, H-B contributed material to an R-Rated film.

I didn't notice before but they re-use the same bit of animation in Child's Play 3:

Design was definitely taken from the my buddy dolls. I thought everything else was based on Robert the Doll.

My little sister had Corky and loved him until I brought Childs play him fom the video rental place. My brother put it on to watch while babysitting and she wouldn't go near Corky after that.

I had a my buddy doll as well when I was a kid and after seeing Child's Play for the first time I took him outside and beat him until his head was bashed in with a baseball bat and buried him in our sandbox. Keep in mind he was my best "friend till the end" up until that point. That movie had a profound effect on me and it is even funnier now as a father how scared of Chucky my 5 year old daughter is...haha

I had a My Buddy for a bit...then they introduced My Pet Monster and my My Buddy was forgotten. Completely understandable. I wanted one when I was a kid and never got one and... well, I still want one damnit.
